Five Johnnies scored double-figures with junior guard Andre Curbelo leading the way with 18 points shooting 8-for-11 from the field to go with eight rebounds and seven assists. Senior center Joel Soriano registered his NCAA-leading seventh double-double versus the Sharks, finishing with 16 points and 10 boards.
David Jones contributed 14 points in the win over LIU. The Johnnies were also pleased to see the return of Rafael Pinzon and Posh Alexander, who both returned from injury on Tuesday and finished in double-figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively.
St. John's shot a season-high 60.6 percent from the floor in the Red Storm's second-highest scoring effort of the year. The Johnnies also dished out a season-high 26 assists on 43 made field goals and outrebounded LIU, 45-24.
On Sunday against Iowa State, Mike Anderson will coach his 100th career game at St. John's where he has posted a 58-41 record in four seasons at the helm. Anderson owns an 8-3 record all-time against Iowa State and last faced the Cyclones in 2014 while head coach at Arkansas.
The Red Storm has split its previous two Big 12-BIG EAST Battle contests, defeating West Virginia at Madison Square Garden during the 2019-20 season before falling to eventual national champion Kansas last year at UBS Arena. The BIG EAST went 8-2 in the series during its first installment in 2019-20, but the leagues have split each of the last two seasons, going 3-3 in 2020-21 and 5-5 a year ago. Entering the weekend, the BIG EAST and Big 12 have each won two contests in the series this season.
Iowa State is led by second year Head Coach T.J. Otzelberger who guided the Cyclones to a 22-13 record and run to the Sweet 16 in 2021-22. This season, Iowa State is off to a 6-1 start with victories over Villanova and then-No. 1 North Carolina in the Phil Knight Invitational. The Cyclones' lone loss of the year came in the PKI Championship Game, falling to UConn, 71-53.
The Cyclones are among the nation's best in causing opposing mistakes, ranking fourth with an +8.1 turnover margin and ninth with 11.4 steals per contest. Iowa State has also held teams 56.3 points per game this season, good for 11th in Division I.

Fellow senior Caleb Grill (11.0 ppg) has started all seven games as well, after coming off the bench in 35 contests and leading the team with 57 threes last season.
Sunday's contest in Ames, Iowa will be the second all-time between the Red Storm and the Cyclones. St. John's won the previous matchup, 71-47, on Dec. 21, 1948 at Madison Square Garden.
