The Johnnies resume BIG EAST action at Finneran Pavilion with tip-off set for 6:30 p.m. on FS1
QUEENS, N.Y. – After closing out non-conference play with a 14-point win over Florida State this past weekend, the St. John's men's basketball team returns to BIG EAST action Wednesday visiting Finneran Pavilion for a matchup with Villanova. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. with Tim Brando and Bill Raftery calling the action on FS1.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. St. John's radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 381 and channel 971 on the SiriusXM app.
The Red Storm (11-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) is coming off its third-straight double-digit victory, knocking off Florida State, 93-79, in the Orange Bowl Basketball Classic on Saturday in Sunrise, Fla. Senior center Joel Soriano erupted for a career-high 23 points to go with 12 rebounds and was named the game's Most Valuable Player. It marked Soriano's NCAA-leading 10th double-double of the season.
St. John's won the battle of the boards against the Seminoles for the 12th time in as many games this season and continue to rank among the national leaders in rebounding. The Red Storm's 42.7 rebounds per contest is the fifth-best average in Division I. St. John's is also top-15 in the nation with a +9.0 rebounding margin and 13.7 offensive boards per game. Soriano has been a key to the Johnnies success on the glass, as the Yonkers native ranks third in the country with 12.6 rebounds per game.
During its recent three-game winning streak, St. John's has outscored its opponents by 15.3 points, averaging 81.0 per game. The Red Storm has also put forth a balanced attack defensively in those three games, registering 8.3 steals, 5.0 blocks and forcing 14.3 turnovers per contest.
St. John's enters its contest with Villanova looking to snap a four-game slide to the Wildcats and its first win at Finneran Pavilion since Jan. 13, 1993. A win on Wednesday for the Johnnies would also match the program's best start since opening the 1982-83 campaign with 14-straight wins.
Villanova (6-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) enters the matchup on a four-game winning streak after taking down Saint Joseph's, 71-64, on Saturday. The Wildcats are led by Caleb Daniels and Eric Dixon who are both averaging 15.9 points per game this season.
The Wildcats rank third in the nation in free-throw shooting, hitting 82.3 percent as a team. Brandon Slater leads the BIG EAST and sits 12th in Division I hitting 91.5 percent of his attempts at the line.
Wednesday's contest will be the 128th all-time meeting between the Red Storm and its most-frequently played opponent in program history. The Wildcats hold a slight 64-63 advantage in a series that dates back to 1909.
