Red Storm look to return to BIG EAST title match for fourth-straight season
QUEENS, N.Y.- St. John's men's tennis Head Coach Dillon Pottish announced the squad's 23-match slate for the upcoming 2023 spring season on Wednesday.
"I'm looking forward to this spring season," Pottish said. "We have scheduled a lot of quality opponents that will prepare us for the BIG EAST Tournament."
The slate features 13 home matches in Queens and a six-contest road trip during the middle of the spring campaign. All game times will be announced at a later date.
The Red Storm will start the dual match slate off with Quinnipiac for the second-straight year on Jan. 26 in Queens. Last season, the Johnnies opened the year with a 6-1 road win over the Bobcats.
The following day, the group will host LIU at the USTA National Tennis Center on Jan. 27. Last year, St. John's sailed past the Sharks, 5-0, on March 23, 2022.
The Red Storm will take its first trip of the year when it meets Cornell in Ithaca, N.Y., on Jan. 29 before venturing to Bethlehem Pa., to take on Lehigh on Feb. 3.
After returning to Queens, the Johnnies will welcome Siena on Feb. 5 and Wagner on Feb. 10. Two days later, St. John's will play a doubleheader with Army and Marist in the Hudson Valley, before two contests at the USTA National Tennis Center against Hofstra on Feb .15 and Boston University on Feb. 18 precede a five-match road swing.
The long stretch away from home will begin against Big Ten opponent Penn State on Feb. 22, the first meeting between the two programs since Jan. 26, 2014. The following match takes the Red Storm to Norfolk, Va. for a showdown with Old Dominion on Feb. 26. The meeting is a return trip from last year when then-No. 64 Monarchs squeaked past the Johnnies, 4-3.
The Red Storm will then head south to face Ole Miss on March 2, the first time facing an SEC squad since its first NCAA Tournament appearance against Florida in 2014. The Rebels have made 28-straight NCAA Tournament appearances and return 2022 ITA All-American Nikola Slavic.
On March 11, St. John's will take on Drexel for the fifth-straight season in the City of Brotherly Love, riding a four-match win streak against the Dragons. The road stint will conclude at Delaware on March 17. The Johnnies narrowly defeated the Blue Hens, 4-3, on Feb. 3, 2022.
After 34 days between home tilts, the Johnnies will ready for their BIG EAST opener against Georgetown on March 24 in Queens. Its next conference battle comes five days later against Villanova at home.
During a six-day stretch, the Coach Pottish's crew will meet a pair of Ivy League foes traveling to Brown on March 26 and hosting Yale on April 1.
Just one day later, St. John's welcomes local foe St. Francis Brooklyn for a tilt in Queens. The Johnnies swept the Terriers, 4-0, in the front end of a doubleheader last year.
On April 7, the team will head to Milwaukee for a meeting with Marquette. The Red Storm have taken the last four contests from its conference foe, including the 2021 BIG EAST semifinal match.
St. John's will wrap up the regular season with a pair of non-conference tilts at home against Monmouth on April 12 and Fordham on April 16.
