The Johnnies will look to earn first win inside Prudential Center against the Pirates since 2014
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's basketball team will look to end the calendar year on a high note when it takes on Seton Hall (7-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) Saturday inside Prudential Center. FS1 will carry the national telecast at 12 p.m. with Jack Benjamin and Jim Spanarkel on the call.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. St. John's radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 385 and channel 975 on the SiriusXM app.
St. John's (11-3, 1-2 BIG EAST) looks to bounce back after nearly completing an 18-point, second-half comeback against No. 22/25 Xavier on Wednesday, before seeing its eight-game winning streak at Carnesecca Arena snapped in an 84-79 setback. Junior wing David Jones led the Red Storm with 19 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Joel Soriano and Montez Mathis chipped in 14 points apiece while Posh Alexander tallied 11 to round out those in double figures.
The Johnnies also aim for their fourth win away from home and first true road victory of the season on Saturday against the Pirates. In St. John's three neutral site wins over Temple, Syracuse and Florida State earlier this year, Soriano averaged a team-best 19.0 points and 12.7 rebounds while Andre Curbelo posted 16.7 points and 5.7 assists per game.
Saturday's contest marks the 109th all-time meeting between the Red Storm and the Pirates with the Johnnies holding a 62-46 advantage in the series. Last season, St. John's snapped a seven-game slide on the road against Seton Hall with an 84-63 victory on January 24 inside Walsh Gymnasium. Alexander led the charge with 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting to go with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals in the Red Storm's victory. However, the Johnnies are still in search for their first win at Prudential Center since Feb. 13, 2014, when D'Angleo Harrison scored a team-high 12 points to help St. John's edge the Pirates, 68-67, in Newark.
Seton Hall enters Saturday's matchup looking to snap a three-game slide. The Pirates have dropped six of their last nine games and are coming off an 83-69 setback at Marquette on Tuesday. Dre Davis made his first start of the season and scored a team-high 15 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the field against the Golden Eagles. The Louisville transfer has scored double figures in seven of 10 appearances this season.
Pirates' Head Coach Shaheen Holloway is in his first season leading his alma mater. Prior to Seton Hall, Holloway spent four seasons as head coach at Saint Peter's and led the Peacocks to the Elite Eight in the 2022 NCAA Tournament.
After traveling to Newark, the Johnnies return to Carnesecca Arena for two of its next three games, beginning on Jan. 3 against Marquette.
