Red Storm Readies for Regular-Season Finale at Marquette

St. John’s faces the Golden Eagles at 3 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's women's basketball will conclude the regular season with a game against Marquette at the Al McGuire Center on Sunday.
Tip-off is slated for 3 p.m. ET on the BIG EAST Digital Network with Michelle Griffin-Wenzel and Dave Bernhard on the call.
St. John's (11-17, 7-11 BIG EAST) comes into the game after falling to No. 7/8 Connecticut, 93-38, at the XL Center on Friday night. The Johnnies shot 26.4 percent from the field while allowing the Huskies to go 40-of-63 from the floor. Kadaja Bailey and Camree Clegg posted nine points apiece to lead the Red Storm. Azzi Fudd led all players in scoring, posting 19 points for UConn as she went 7-of-9 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the arc.
On the season, Leilani Correa leads the Johnnie squad with 17.4 points per game. Bailey follows closely behind, averaging 13.6 points. The Long Beach, N.Y. native is just 15 points shy from reaching 1,000 for her career. Rayven Peeples leads the Red and White on the boards, pulling down 9.5 rebounds per game.
Marquette enters its final home contest at 19-9 this season and 12-7 in BIG EAST play. The team is averaging 64.1 points while shooting 42.4 percent this year. Starting in all 28 games for the Golden Eagles, Lauren Van Kleunen posts a team-best 12.9 point per game. Chloe Marotta paces the squad with 7.3 rebounds and Jordan King dishes out a team-high 4.4 assists per game.
The Golden Eagles topped Providence 57-51 on Friday night at Alumni Hall. Liza Karlen propelled the team to victory as she posted a double-double with a career-best 24 points to go along with 10 boards. Marotta pulled down a season-high 13 boards and recorded five assists during the win.
Marquette holds the 19-10 advantage all-time against the Johnnies. St. John's last topped the Golden Eagles, 81-74, on Feb. 15, 2019 when Marquette was ranked seventh in the nation.
During the first meeting between the teams, the Golden Eagles came away with the 70-65 victory. Five Marquette players scored in double figures. Karissa McLaughlin led the Golden Eagles with 18 points. King scored 10 points and was a rebound shy of a double-double. St. John's Correa led the Red Storm in scoring as the junior posted 17 points and added five rebounds.
Up next, St. John's will travel to Uncasville, Conn., for the BIG EAST Women's Basketball Tournament. The Johnnies will enter the tournament as the seven seed and will face the 10-seed at 1:30 p.m. on March 4 on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
