St. John’s Drops Nail-Biter at No. 74 Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3

Devarakonda, Nielsen and de Lucas all tally singles wins
FORT MYERS, Fla.- The St. John's women's tennis team narrowly fell to No. 74 Florida Gulf Coast, 4-3, at the FGCU Tennis Complex on Tuesday.
The two sides were knotted 3-3, when FGCU's Jordan Ossa rallied back in the third set for a victory in the no. 4 slot 1-6, 6-3, 7-5, to clinch the win for the Eagles.
After FGCU nabbed the doubles point, the Red Storm grabbed three victories in singles competition. Jayden Nielsen, Lalita Devarakonda and Yesica de Lucas all logged an individual win in Fort Myers, Fla.
On the no. 2 court Devarakonda breezed past the Eagles Isabella Colmenares, 6-0, 6-3. In her five singles wins this spring, the graduate student is outscoring her opponents by a margin an astounding margin of 60-8.
Nielsen tied for the team-lead with her sixth win in another perseverant effort on the no. 3 court. The Vancouver native moved past FGCU's Ida Ferding 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, improving her individual record to 6-1.
After falling a set behind, de Lucas charged back to win her contest against the Eagles Fanny Norin, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.
The Johnnies will return to the Northeast to complete their road-swing when it faces Lehigh on Sunday. First serve from Bethlehem, Pa. is scheduled for 11 a.m.
