Red Storm to kick off exhibition action on Friday night at Belson Stadium against Fordham
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following the program's 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance this past fall, St. John's Men's Soccer Head Coach Dr. David Masur has announced his team's schedule for the upcoming spring exhibition season.
The Johnnies will host five games, all at Belson Stadium, against stellar competition. St. John's will play collegiate opponents in four of those five matches with the other coming against NYCFC II of the newly formed MLS Next Pro.
Admission to all spring St. John's soccer matches is complementary.
The Red Storm will open the spring season this Friday night, March 25, when it entertains local foe Fordham at 7 p.m. on Belson Stadium.
Exactly one week later, the Johnnies will host another exhibition match in Queens, welcoming Rutgers for a 7 p.m. tilt on April 1.
The following Saturday, St. John's will play another former BIG EAST opponent at Belson Stadium, hosting Syracuse for a 2 p.m. kick-off on April 9. The last time the two teams met in Queens on Nov. 24, 2019, St. John's claimed a 2-1 victory and secured a spot in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
On Wednesday, April 13, at 7 p.m. the Red Storm will take on NYCFC II of MLS NEXT Pro, the newly former feeder team of reigning MLS Cup Champion NYCFC that will play its home matches at Belson Stadium.
The Red Storm will then close out its spring campaign on Friday, April 22, when it takes on reigning CAA Champion and NCAA Tournament Round of 16 participant Hofstra at 5:30 p.m.
This past fall, St. John's turned in a record of 11-6-3, including a 5-3-2 mark in BIG EAST play, good enough for a third-place finish in a conference that sent five teams to the NCAA Round of 32. The Johnnies appeared in the NCAA Tournament for the 22nd time in program history and won at least one NCAA match for the 14th time.
Of the Red Storm's six losses, five were by one goal, four were against ranked opponents, three were in overtime, three were against conference champions and two were against eventual College Cup teams.
Three Johnnies—Luka Gavran, Lucas Bartlett and Brandon Knapp— were selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Gavran, a United Soccer Coaches Third Team All-American, became just the third keeper in program history to earn the conference's top positional honor.
In January, Bartlett, Gavran and Tani Oluwaseyi were all selected in the MLS SuperDraft, tying a St. John's record for MLS draft picks in a single year.
