St. John’s Drops Contest With Villanova

Red Storm and Wildcats will meet again Sunday at 12 p.m.
VILLANOVA, Pa. (March 26, 2022) – The St. John's softball team dropped its contest with Villanova, 9-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Villanova Softball Complex.
Amy Mallah went 2-for-3 at the plate, recording the lone RBI for the Red Storm and extending her hitting streak to four games. London Jarrard, Madison Wallace and Anna Freveletti each added in a base hit.
Hannah Mearns fanned three batters over 4.0 innings of work but was tagged with the loss for St. John's (5-22, 1-7 BIG EAST).
Sara Kennedy notched the first complete game of her career, striking out six batters while only allowing one unearned run across 6.0 innings.
The Wildcats (12-17, 2-2 BIG EAST) quickly got on the board when lead-off hitter Chloe Smith singled to left field before coming home on a Kelsey White two-out single to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.
Mearns kept the game steady in the second inning, retiring Villanova in order with two punchouts.
Freveletti started the top of the third with a single through the right side to tally the first hit of the day for the Johnnies. With runners on first and second, Mallah singled up the middle to bring Freveletti home and knot the game at one.
Villanova wrestled the lead back in the home half of the third as Smith scored on a wild pitch before a Megan Kern run-scoring single expanded the Wildcats' lead to 3-1.
Villanova grew the advantage with two more tallies in the bottom of the fourth off a Smith double to left field that brought home both runners to give the Wildcats a four-run edge, 5-1.
The Wildcats tacked on three more runs in the fifth to make it an 8-1 game in favor of the home team.
Smith finished her afternoon with her second double of the game to score Alexa Raphael and walk off with a 9-1 run-rule victory.
St. John's and Villanova will close the series on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. on FloSports.
