Johnnies cruise in first outdoor home match
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's men's tennis team swept Fordham in its first outdoor home match of the season, 4-0.
The Red Storm (12-3) collected the doubles point and grabbed all three completed singles matches at the St. John's tennis courts on Saturday.
In partner play, three-time reigning BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week Axel Vila Antuna and Ignacio Garcia continued to roll over the Rams Tom Russworm and Gio Soemarno, 6-2. Carl Gustavsson and Vlad Vasilache were victorious in the other doubles match, as the duo coasted to a 6-1 win over Nick Kanazirev and Juan Paredes.
In singles play, all three finished matches went to St. John's in straight sets. Gustavsson took the no. 1 court and notched a 6-2, 6-1 win against Fordham's Russworm. Garcia registered a pair of 6-1 sets to move past Paredes. In the final contest of the afternoon, Vasilache recorded his fifth win in his last six matches. The stellar freshman posted a 6-1, 6-4 score line over the Rams Soemarno.
The Johnnies have a quick turnaround and will take on no. 59 Cornell on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Ithaca, N.Y.
