Champagnie Selected to All-Met First Team and Alexander Garners All-Met Second Team Honors
Queens, N.Y. – The Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) announced Monday that St. John's men's basketball standouts Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander earned All-Met honors for the 2021-22 campaign. Champagnie was named to the All-Met First Team while Alexander earned All-Met Second Team honors.
Â
The Brooklyn natives, who both earned All-BIG EAST recognition this past season, helped lead St. John's to a 17-15 overall record marking the 89th winning season in the program's storied history.
Â
Champagnie, a two-time All-Met First Team selection and 2020 All-Met Rookie of the Year, averaged 19.2 points in 31 appearances in 2021-22, ranking second in the BIG EAST and 35th in Division I in scoring. He reached double figures 26 times with 15 efforts of 20 plus points and a trio of 30-point performances. In BIG EAST Tournament action, Champagnie scored 26 points in the team's opening win over DePaul before adding 23 in a one-point quarterfinal loss to eventual champion Villanova.
Â
One of only seven Johnnies to garner All-BIG EAST First Team honors twice, Champagnie also led St. John's with 6.6 rebounds per contest while ranking second in the BIG EAST averaging 2.0 steals and 10th with 1.1 blocks per contest. Champagnie recorded four of his 15 career double-doubles in 2021-22.
Â
Champagnie, who announced his intent to forego the remainder of his collegiate career and enter the 2022 NBA Draft, leaves St. John's ranked 20th on the program's career scoring list with 1,408 points (16.0 ppg) in his three seasons leading the Red Storm. Champagnie also finished top-six all-time in career free-throw percentage (6th, 81.5 pct) and 3-point field goals made (4th, 149) while pulling down 598 rebounds (6.8 rpg), good enough for 32nd all-time at St. John's.
Â
A two-time All-Met selection and the 2021 All-Met Rookie of the Year, Alexander finished second on the team averaging 13.8 points in 29 appearances last season. The sophomore guard, who earned All-BIG EAST Honorable Mention recognition in 2021-22, led the league for the second straight year and was 11th in Division I with 2.3 steals per game. Â
Â
Alexander also ranked among the BIG EAST leaders in assists (2nd, 5.5 apg), field goal percentage (4th, 49.8 pct), assist-to-turnover ratio (4th, 2.3), offensive rebounds (5th, 2.6 rpg) and free-throw percentage (10th, 74.1 pct). Alexander scored double figures 23 times last season with three 20+ point performances, highlighted by a 29-point, 12-assist double double versus Providence on Feb. 1.
Â
Alexander received BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll recognition in back-to-back weeks last season. He earned his first award on Jan. 31 after scoring a game-high 19 points to go with seven rebounds in a win at Seton Hall. One week later, Alexander helped lead St. John's to a pair of road wins at Georgetown and Butler.
Â
Alexander finished the 2021-22 campaign with 154 assists and 67 steals, both marks rank just outside the top-10 on the program's single season charts.
