St. John’s Concludes First Round at BIG EAST Championship

Jack Simon leads the way for the Red Storm after 18 holes
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The St. John's men's golf team concluded the opening round of the 2022 BIG EAST Championship at the Mountain View Course at Callaway Gardens on Monday. The Red Storm sit in 10th place, as the squad finished with a combined score of 298 for the day.
Marquette concluded the first round as the leaders in the clubhouse. The Golden Eagles shot a 7-under par 281, led by freshman Max Lyons, who matched the BIG EAST Tournament single round record with an 8-under 64. Butler sits in second, just five shots behind Marquette, as the team recorded a combined 286. Reigning conference champion Connecticut finished in third as the team posted a 1-under 287.
Jack Simon led the Johnnies with an even 72 for his opening round. The senior logged three birdies, including one on the 18th hole, to climb back to even par and finish tied for 12th.
Ryan Rittberger tied for 25th place, firing off a 2-over 74 for the day. The Greenlawn, N.Y., native sunk a pair of birdies on the back nine. Finishing a stroke behind the junior and tied for 33rd was Peicheng Chen, who signed off with a 75 for the day. The freshman was one of six golfers to record an eagle during the first round.
Gage Wolfle shot a 77 to finish tied for 40th. Rounding out the Red Storm was Tyler Gerbavsits, who carded a 78 to tie for 43rd.
The second round of competition will begin at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Results from the tournament can be found on GolfStat.com.
