QUEENS, N.Y. – Former St. John's women's soccer standout Maia Cabrera will suit up for the Dominican Republic, as the team gets set for World Cup qualifications.
"Maia will continue the fine tradition we have of St. John's Women's Soccer players playing after college," said Women's Soccer Head Coach Ian Stone. "This Dominican Republic squad is a rapidly improving women's soccer team, so we're all really excited for Maia to be included on this roster."
Cabrera played in 19 matches this past season, making one start. The midfielder tallied three goals during the campaign, including one against Duke in the Johnnies Round of 16 match against the Blue Devils. The Rego Park, N.Y. native recorded an assist in the season opener against NJIT.
During the spring 2021 season, Cabrera saw action in nine games for the Red Storm. She found the back of the net twice during the shortened campaign and posted three points in the Johnnies' match against Seton Hall as she tallied one goal and one assist against the Pirates.
As a junior, Cabrera played in all 18 matches for the Red and White, making five starts. She notched her first career goal, a game winner, against Seton Hall. The midfielder dished out a pair of assists on two separate occasions. During her sophomore campaign, Cabrera also saw action in all 19 matches for St. John's.
In her debut season for the Johnnies, Cabrera earned All-BIG EAST Freshman Team honors as she played in 16 games while making two starts. She logged her lone point, an assist against Creighton, during the Red Storm's double overtime victory in its BIG EAST home opener against Creighton
