QUEENS, N.Y. (May 11, 2022) – St. John's softball freshman London Jarrard was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon.
The freshman was named to the team after starting in all 23 conference games boasting a .429 batting average throughout league play. The mark puts her third in the BIG EAST behind Player of the Year Kailey Wilson (Creighton) and Freshman of the Year Taylor Hill (Seton Hall). Jarrard also ranked second in the conference with nine doubles.
Defensively, the freshman fielded four double plays, good enough for third in the league, and ranked fourth in the BIG EAST with 45 assists.
Throughout the season, Jarrard led the team in numerous offensive categories, finishing with a .400 batting average, which ranks 10th in the nation among NCAA Division I freshmen. She is the ninth St. John's player in program history to post a batting average of .400 or higher, joining Assistant Coach Marissa Rizzi on that list. The Carlsbad, Calif., native also etched her name in the record book with a .467 on-base percentage, which ranked the eighth best mark in a single-season.
The team's leader in batting average, Jarrard also paced the Red Storm with 48 hits, 13 doubles, 25 RBIs and 66 total bases. She was second in the team with 17 runs scored and 11 stolen bases. Jarrard also recorded her first collegiate home run on April 20 against Iona.
Jarrard was tabbed the conference's rookie of the week on Feb. 28, after she went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored against Fairfield. before posting a 3-for-4 effort with three RBIs and two runs scored against the St. Joseph's at the USF Tournament.
The freshman was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 4 after she hit .538 (7-for-13) with four RBIs, four runs scored and a pair of doubles in a 3-1 week for the Johnnies.
Jarrard's strength at the plate did not go unnoticed as she was intentionally walked six times during the season, including a three-walk day against BIG EAST foe Butler on April 10.
St. John's has had at least one player named to the All-BIG EAST Team every year since 2014. Jarrard becomes the seventh Red Storm student-athlete to earn the honor during her freshman campaign joining Christina Tucker (2004), Kaitlyn Fitzgerald (2014), Lauren Zick (2015), Krystal Puga (2015), Gretchen Bowie (2017) and teammate Peyton Cody (2019).
