The Johnnies responded in the bottom of the sixth as they cut the opposition's lead in half. Amy Mallah started the rally as she singled and advanced to second on a Melanie Santos ground-out. Wallace singled to left center to plate Mallah and get St. John's within one.
Seton Hall threatened in the top of the seventh with the bases loaded and one away. However, Brown was able to erase the threat by way of a fielder's choice and strikeout.
In the home half of the frame, three-straight singles loaded the bases in a hurry, bringing Jarrard to the plate with one out on the board. Jarrard blasted a sacrifice fly deep to left field, tying the game at two apiece, sending the opening game of the twin bill to extra innings.
The Pirates capitalized in the top of the eighth, putting runners on first and second with a pair of singles. Down to its final out of the frame, Seton Hall's Wingo doubled to right field to score one before a Jenna Blevins shot scored two more to give Seton Hall the 5-2 edge.
Looking to extend the game once more, Thompson tallied a two-out double before Lologo sent a homer over the fence to put the Johnnies within one. However, the rally fell short as Smith struck out Freveletti to give Seton Hall the win.
