St. John’s graduate student came on strong late in 2021-22 season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a stellar finish to his collegiate career, former St. John's standout Aaron Wheeler has earned an invitation to play in NBA Summer League with the Miami Heat.
Â
In his lone season with the Johnnies, Wheeler ranked third on the team with 10.0 points per game on 48.1 percent shooting, including a 38.5 percent effort from beyond the arc. Wheeler played his best basketball against the schedule's toughest competition, averaging 13.3 points per game during league play. That increase in production was anchored by a seismic jump in 3-point efficiency, as Wheeler shot 42.0 percent from deep against BIG EAST foes after going just 5-for-19 (29.4%) during non-league action.
Â
The Stamford, Conn., native reached double figures 17 times, 16 of which came during conference play.
Â
Wheeler's most explosive performance came in a loss to eventual league champion Villanova at Madison Square Garden, as the 6-foot-9 swing man tallied a career-best 31 points on 11-of-17 shooting, including a 6-for-10 showing from beyond the arc.Â
Â
Wheeler recorded two double-doubles on the season, tallying 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win at Seton Hall before posting 11 points and 11 boards on Senior Night against Xavier.Â
Â
Wheeler came to Queens following three seasons at Purdue, where he helped the Boilermakers to a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. His most productive campaign as a freshman when he averaged 4.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per outing, helping the Boilermakers reach the Elite Eight.
