Jessie Kweon Earns BIG EAST Sport Excellence Award

Red Storm senior honored as the conference’s top golfer in athletic and academic success
NEW YORK. –St. John's Women's Golf standout Jessie Kweon was announced as the recipient of the BIG EAST Women's Golf Scholar-Athlete Sport Excellence Award on Tuesday.
The honor, which is given to one student-athlete in each BIG EAST-sponsored sport, is based on academic credentials, athletic accolades or performances and volunteer service to the community. Student-athletes who have attained junior academic standing and a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 are eligible. The winners are chosen by the BIG EAST Faculty Athletics Representative Council.
Kweon made headlines all season long as the senior led the Red Storm squad during seven events this year. The Little Neck, N.Y., product ended the 2021-22 campaign with a 75.22 stroke average, pacing the Johnnies during the season. Kweon was named to the All-BIG EAST team following the stellar season.
Kweon took home medalist honors at the Hartford Invitational and helped St. John's to a team title at the event on April 3. Following the performance, Kweon received BIG EAST Golfer of the Week honors. She also placed sixth at the BIG EAST Championship, her second-straight season as the Johnnies' top finisher.
The senior closed out the fall slate with two top-10 finishes. She notched a second-place mark at the Quinnipiac Classic and finish tied for seventh at the UD Blue Hen Invitational.
Following the academic year, Kweon was one of seven Johnnies to be designated as 2022 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar. To qualify a student must be at least a sophomore in academic standing, maintain a 3.5 GPA or higher, excel in athletic competition and demonstrate commitment to leadership in their communities.
The women's golf program continues to shine both on and off the course. Earlier this month the Red Storm received WGCA All-Scholar Team honors, with a team GPA of 3.875 ranking fourth in the nation. The Johnnies also had sixth golfers named to the 2021-22 WGCA All-American Scholar Team.
