Red Storm Recognized with United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Awards

Men’s and women’s soccer squads honored for achievements in the classroom
QUEENS, N.Y. – Both the St. John's men's and women's soccer programs have been recognized with the 2021-22 Team Academic Award from United Soccer Coaches.
Programs that post a team GPA of 3.0 or higher for the academic year are eligible to receive the accolade.
This marks the 15th time that the men's team has claimed the award and the 18th time overall that the women's squad has done so, including each of the last six years.
The men's soccer squad, which also won the BIG EAST Team Academic Excellence Award, posted a GPA of 3.54 for the academic year. The Red Storm achieved that classroom mark in addition to securing the 22nd NCAA Tournament bid in program history and advancing to the tournament's second round against top-seeded Oregon State.
The women's soccer team boasted a 3.61 GPA in addition to recording one of the finest seasons in its history on the pitch. After securing a spot in the BIG EAST Championship match for the first time since 1994 and earning the program's fourth NCAA Tournament berth since 2009, the Red Storm advanced further than it ever had before, defeating Brown, 1-0, on the road before outlasting Samford in PKs to earn a spot in the Round of 16 for the first time in team history.
Both teams boasted a United Soccer Coaches All-American, as Zsani Kajan earned a spot on the second team while Luka Gavran found a place on the third team. Kajan was taken eighth in the NWSL Draft by OL Reign before Gavran (31st) and two of his teammates—Lucas Bartlett (6th) and Tani Oluwaseyi (17th)—were picked in the MLS SuperDraft.
The women's soccer team will begin its 2022 season at home on Aug. 18 against Saint Joseph's. The men's soccer squad will kick off the campaign a week later on Aug. 25 at Monmouth.
