St. John’s outshoots Pioneers,15-5, in the loss at home
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's soccer team fell to Sacred Heart, 2-0, at Belson Stadium on Thursday night.
The Johnnies (1-1-1) outshot the Pioneers (1-1), 15-5, despite only landing three on the mark. Red Storm keeper Gina Muzi recorded one save despite picking up the loss to move to 1-1 this year. Sacred Heart goalie Elyssa Kipperman improved to 1-1 as the senior logged three saves in the contest.
Isabelle Aviza led the Red Storm with four shots in the loss. Molly Feighan and Brooke Boyd logged three shots apiece. The trio tallied one shot on goal each.
The Pioneers looked to get on the board first when a foul by St. John's led to an SHU penalty kick in the 13th minute. Muzi made a diving save to her right, halting the ball in its path before clearing the ball out of the box to keep the match scoreless.
St. John's senior Aviza sent a rocket towards the goal in the 19th minute. However, the shot was just off target, nailing the right post. Feighan recorded a pair of shots early in the match with her blast in the 23rd minute landing wide right.
Jessica Garziano went on the attack after Aviza fed her a ball in the 28th minute but the SHU keeper made a save to keep the game scoreless. The Red Storm continued to bombard the Sacred Heart defense, tallying three more shots before the break. The attempts were just off target and with both keepers logging a single save, the teams went into the locker room locked in a scoreless tie.
Coming out of halftime, Sacred Heart drew first blood as the Pioneer squad logged a goal in the 48th minute. With the ball bouncing around the Red Storm defense, Morgan Bovardi gained possession and flicked the ball just past Muzi and into the back of the net.
Trailing 1-0, Aviza looked to take back the momentum when she sent a blast towards the bottom right corner of the net. However, Kipperman notched her second save of the match when she laid out for the stop. Boyd also had a chance, but sent a header wide left in the 62nd minute. Red Storm forward Aviza thought she had the equalizer in the 77th minute as Athina Sofroniou jabbed a ball into the box for the senior to get her head on. The ball landed just above the goal, keeping the Johnnies off the board.
In the 84th minute, Sacred Heart doubled its lead when Kelly Medeiros sent a ball to the bottom left corner of the net. Frantically needing a score, the Red Storm continued to attack the goal, earning a corner kick with time winding down. However, a foul on St. John's ended the Johnnies chances as they fell to Sacred Heart, 2-0.
The Red Storm will look to rebound on Sunday when the team travels to Columbia for a match. Kick-off is slated for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
