QUEENS, N.Y. (Aug. 27, 2022) – The St. John's women's soccer team hits the road as the Red Storm faces off against Columbia in the Lions' season opener on Sunday afternoon. Kick-off from Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium is slated for 2 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The Red Storm comes into Sunday's contest following a 2-0 loss to Sacred Heart at Belson Stadium on Thursday night. The Johnnies outshot the Pioneers, 15-5, despite only landing three on target. Isabelle Aviza led the Red Storm with four shots in the loss. Molly Feighan and Brooke Boyd logged three shots each. The trio tallied one shot on goal apiece.
Gina Muzi moved to 1-1 with the loss. The St. John's goalkeeper made a sensational save to start the match when she made a diving play to halt Sacred Heart's penalty attempt in the 13th minute. Despite posting a clean first half in the net, the Pioneers added a pair of goals in the 48th and 84th minutes, respectfully.
Jessica Garziano leads the Johnnies offensively this season as the midfielder recorded two goals during the first two matches this year. The Melville, N.Y., native is 1-for-1 on penalty kicks as she blasted her attempt past the Saint Joseph's keeper for the Red Storm's first score of the year. Garziano added a tally when Feighan found the senior at the top of the box before she powered a ball past the NJIT keeper.
Following last week's action, Garziano was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll and the TopDrawerSoccer National Team of the Week. The midfielder was one of two BIG EAST players to earn the distinction from TopDrawerSoccer. Garziano had previously received recognition from the organization when she checked in at no. 68 on TopDrawerSoccer's Preseason Top 100.
Sunday's contest will be Columbia's season opener. The Ivy League competitor was picked fourth in the preseason poll voted on by the media and league communications directors. The Lions posted a 9-6-1 mark in 2021 with a 3-4 record against conference opponents. The 2022 campaign marks the seventh season under head coach Tracey Bartholomew. Just the third head coach in program history, Bartholomew holds a 56-39-19 all-time record with the Lions.
