St. John’s Dominates Day Two of VolleyBucs VolleyPalooza, Claims Tournament Title

Red Storm off to best start since 2018
CHARLESTON, S.C. (Aug. 27, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team dominated during its second day at the VolleyBucs VolleyPalooza tournament, picking up wins against App State and host Charleston Southern on Saturday. With the victories, the Red Storm claimed the tournament title, posting an undefeated record for the two-day event.
After starting the season 3-0, the Johnnies are off to their best start since 2018 when St. John's won five-straight matches to begin the season. During the campaign, the Red Storm earned a bid to the NIVC postseason tournament.
"What an amazing gritty day today winning two back-to-back matches on the road and capturing the Volleybucs Volleypalooza tournament title," said Head Coach Joanne Persico. "A true team, gutsy effort pushing through some fatigue to get that win. Super proud of my squad and staff- on to the next!"
GAME ONE
St. John's won a five-set thriller to start the day as the team took down App State (1-2). The Red Storm grabbed the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-20, respectively, before the Mountaineers evened the game with set scores of 25-22, and 27-25. The Johnnies dominated the decisive set, 15-8.
Reigning BIG EAST Player of the Year Rachele Rastelli poured in a match-high 25 kills while hitting .439. The Parma, Italy, native added a team-best seven blocks and two aces.
Giorgia Walther logged 20 kills along with four blocks and two aces while Magda Stambrowska contributed 12 kills on a .458 clip and seven blocks. Wiktoria Kowalczyk recorded a career-high 63 assists along with four kills while Bree Martin notched a match-best 21 digs.
St. John's took a 16-11 lead in the first set after scoring three-straight points including a kill from Kowalczyk. The teams battled back-and-forth, but the Red Storm added three-in-a-row, once again, to hold the 21-15 advantage. Going point-for-point with the Mountaineers, Kowalczyk tallied a kill to get the team to set point before putting the set away to claim the 25-21 victory. Rastelli added in five kills on a .714 clip during the set, helping secure the opening set triumph.
A tightly contested second set followed with neither squad able to take a large lead. The Johnnies scored on back-to-back kill to hold the 19-16 edge only to have App State even the set. With the set tied at 19, the Red Storm took off on a 6-1 run with Garcia and Rastelli stuffing the Mountaineer attacker to cap off the win.
App State used a 5-0 spurt to start the third set before the Johnnies clawed back and tied the set at nine. After a Walther kill locked the set up at 14 apiece, the Mountaineers took back the momentum with a 6-1 rally to take the 20-15 lead. Despite the Red Storm scoring seven of the next 10 points, a service error by the Johnnies gave the opposition set point before McCall Denny secured the third set, 25-23, with a kill.
App State jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set after scoring four-straight for the 7-4 advantage. The Red Storm fought back, tying the set before an ace from Kowalczyk gave St. John's the 10-9 advantage. A battle commenced with the 19 ties over the course of the set. However, s service error by the Red Storm and App State's Maya Winterhoff kill pushed the score in the Mountaineers' favor, 27-25.
With the match on the line, the Johnnies scored three unanswered to start the decisive set. Rastelli continued to dominate as she hammered home three-straight kills to put the squad ahead 7-3. With the Red Storm in full control, St. John's added a final run to close out the match, claiming the 15-8 triumph and the five-set victory.
Game Two
The Red Storm needed just four sets to capture the tournament title on Saturday evening as the team defeated Charleston Southern (1-2), 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-22, to close out its opening weekend.
Walther narrowly missed a double-double as she notched a match-high 19 kills and nine digs. Rastelli added in 18 kills. Lucrezia Lodi tallied five aces along with seven kills and eight digs while Martin had a team-best 11 digs.
Charleston Southern claimed six of the first eight points to take the lead before the Johnnies fought back to even the set at seven. With the Buccaneers ahead, 15-14, The Johnnies gave up three-straight points to the opposition expanding the deficit to four. The Johnnies were unable to take back the lead as the Buccaneers claimed the 25-20 victory in the opening set.
Charleston Southern jumped out to an early to hold a 9-7 edge before the Red Storm rallied back to take four-straight points. The two-point advantage was short lived as the Bucaneers scored 6-of-7 to earn the 16-13 lead. However, the momentum shifted in favor of the Johnnies when the Red Storm rattled off a 7-0 run to get ahead, 22-17. With CSU within two, 22-20, a pair of blocks and an attack error pushed the set in the Red Storm's favor, 25-20.
Lodi served three-straight aces to push the Johnnies ahead, 12-9, in the third set. The Red Storm maintained its advantage with an attack error by the opposition building on the team's five-point lead. Charleston Southern posted three-straight errors to end the set, securing the 25-20 win and giving the Red Storm the 2-1 edge heading into the fourth set.

The Johnnies return to action next weekend when they take on Miami (Fla.), UNLV and Weber State in the UNLV Invitational.
