The Red Storm to open BIG EAST play on Thursday
ITHACA N.Y. – In the St. John's women's soccer team's final non-conference match of the year, the Red Storm played Cornell to a scoreless draw at Berman Field on Saturday afternoon.
The draw is the third for the Johnnies (3-2-3) this season and the team's first scoreless mark since the 2018 campaign.
Gina Muzi posted a clean sheet, her third this year, as the senior logged three saves in the match. Cornell (1-4-3) split time between the team's goalkeepers with Nicole Shulman earning the start in the net and Erica Fox coming in for the second half. Both netminders for the Big Red logged a save each.
The offense got off to a slow start for both teams, with Cornell firing the first shot of the game in the 14th minute. Muzi came away with the dive stop to keep the Big Red off the board. Kayla Mesaros posted the lone shot on goal for the Johnnies in the opening frame as the forward sent a low cross to the center of the goal, forcing Shulman to make a play on the ball.
Despite Cornell blasting shots two shots midway through the first half, the Red Storm defense kept the Big Red scoreless in the first half. St. John's tallied three looks to end the offense efforts by both teams in the first half, but all missed the mark.
Coming out of the break, Isabelle Aviza launched the first shot of the half out of the top of the net in the 56th minute. Ava Collins looked to connect but had her shot fall short before the Big Red offense pelted the Johnnie defense with four-straight blasts.
The Red Storm combatted Cornell's offensive attack with four straight shots of its own. Collins recorded the best look of the day in the 75th minute when the junior faced the Cornell keeper at the top of the box. Fox made a diving stop to keep St. John's off the board and leaving the match scoreless.
Following the Johnnies' final shot in the 81st minute, Cornell logged a pair of shots during the final minutes of play. However, the Big Red was unable to get anything past Muzi, resulting in a scoreless draw.
St. John's begins conference play on Thursday as the squad takes reigning BIG EAST Tournament Champion Georgetown. Kick-off from the Maryland Soccerplex is slated for 7 p.m. and will air on FS1.
