St. John’s Drops Four Set Match At UNLV

Johnnies fall to reigning NIVC Champions
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (Sept. 3, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team fell in four sets to reigning NIVC Champions UNLV in four sets on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Rebels remain undefeated, advancing to 5-0 on the season.
The Red Storm (3-3) took the first set, 25-22, before UNLV took the next three sets, 25-14, 25-18 and 25-15, respectively.
Lucrezia Lodi led the Johnnies with 14 kills along with nine digs and three blocks.
Rachele Rastelli contributed nine kills while Erin Jones added eight kills. Wiktoria Kowalczyk recorded a match-high 37 assists.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair until the Rebels grabbed a 20-17 lead. The Johnnies retaliated recording six straight points to get ahead, 23-20. Eleonora Tosi and Lodi recorded consecutive blocks during the spurt. UNLV tried to get back on top with two Chloe Thomas kills but a Rastelli kill and a Magda Stambrowksa/Lodi block secured the set for the Red Storm, 25-22. St. John's hit at a .414 clip during the set compared to the Rebels' .103.
UNLV came out firing in the second set holding the Red Storm to a .034 hitting percentage. The Rebels used a .440 clip to grab an early lead and the second set, 25-14.
In the third set, UNLV powered forward, securing a 21-10 lead. Despite the Johnnies recording eight of the next 12 points, the Rebels captured the set, 25-18, and a 2-1 lead. During the final burst, Jones recorded three kills.
The Johnnies were able to grab a 3-2 lead in the fourth set before the Rebels went off on a 23-12 run to close the final set, 25-15.
The Red Storm will travel to Fairfield on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. before it starts an eight-game homestand starting with the Jack Kaiser Classic on Friday morning at 10 a.m.
