Red Storm will face reigning MAAC Champions
QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 6, 2022) – The St. John's volleyball team will travel to Fairfield, Conn., on Wednesday for a midweek match against the Stags.
The 6 p.m. game will be streamed live on the Stag Sports Network, available on FairfieldStags.com. Live Stats will be available on StatBroadcast.
In its second weekend of play, the Red Storm fell to a loaded field at the UNLV Rebel Challenge, dropping matches against Miami, Weber State and reigning NIVC Champion UNLV. Lucrezia Lodi pulled together an impressive stat line, nearly logging a double-double in each match. Lodi's most notable performance came against UNLV when the freshman logged a team-high 14 kills along with nine digs.
After two weekend of play, St. John's ranks first in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.244), assists (12.92/set) and kills (325). Wiktoria Kowalczyk leads the BIG EAST in assists (259) and ranks fourth in the nation while Magda Stambrowska sits in second place in the conference with a .385 hitting percentage.
Giorgia Walther sits atop the league rankings for kills (93) while also leading the conference in points (104). Rachele Rastelli follows Walther taking third in the league in both kills (3.67/set) and points (4.17/set). The duo rank within the top 50 nationally in points and total kills.
Last season Fairfield won its third consecutive MAAC regular season championship and the conference tournament. For these reasons, the Stags were selected first in the preseason coaches' poll. The Stags are 4-2 on the season and most recently won the Villanova Classic, picking up wins against the Wildcats, Lafayette and New Hampshire.
Fairfield returns MAAC Player of the Year KJ Johnson. The senior ranked 10th nationally last season with 4.75 kills per set and was one of two players to hit better than .300 in more than 1,000 attempts. Defensively, Johnson posted 11 double-doubles and averaged 2.42 digs per set. The squad also includes Preseason All-MAAC pick Ella Gardine, who led the team last season with 111 blocks.
St. John's leads the series against Fairfield, 6-4. In Connecticut, the series is split two apiece. This will be the first meeting between the teams since 2017.
