Red Storm recorded an 11-9 advantage in shots
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – In the first meeting between the traditional men's college soccer powers since 2015, St. John's fell to Indiana, 1-0, on Tuesday night at Bill Armstrong Stadium.
For the third time in four games this season, St. John's (1-3-0) controlled possession and outshot its opponent, but came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 result. The Red Storm outshot the Hoosiers (1-1-1) on the game by an 11-9 margin, including a 9-4 edge in the second half. St. John's also earned six corner kicks to Indiana's four.
Indiana recorded the opening half's best scoring chance in the 20th minute off a corner kick, but Zenden Hart came up with a skillful save to keep the contest level. Hart, a freshman, made three saves on the evening.
St. John's began to turn the tables around the 30th minute of action, but was unable to produce a solid scoring opportunity over the remainder of the opening half.
Indiana scored the game's lone goal in the 49th minute. Following a pair of blocked shots, Indiana's Tommy Mihalic waited patiently near the top of the box before sending a right-footed bicycle kick into the lower-right corner.
After the highlight-reel goal, St. John's wasted no time getting back on the front foot. In the 51st minute, Nigel Griffith had a shot blocked in front before Brandon Knapp narrowly missed with his header on the ensuing corner kick.
Ank Nibogora recorded a pair of stellar scoring chances in the 53rd and 56th minutes. On the first opportunity, he corralled a beautiful through pass into the box from Griffith, but starting goalkeeper Bryant Pratt came up with the one-on-one save. Three minutes later, an Adrian Roseth cross resulted in a header from point-blank range, but JT Harms, who entered the contest for the injured Pratt after Nibogora's first try, made the stop.
Roseth missed in front in the 57th minute before Harms logged another big save for the Hoosiers in the 69th against Wesley Leggett on the short side.
In the 80th minute, freshman Juston Rainey had a great look in front following a Roseth cross, but couldn't get enough on his header to beat Harms.
St. John's continued to press in the final minutes of action, but could not come up with the equalizer, as Indiana hung on for a 1-0 victory.
Indiana took a 4-3-2 advantage in the series history against St. John's with its win on Tuesday. Since 2001, St. John's and Indiana have met three times in December: twice in the College Cup and once in the national quarterfinals.
St. John's will return to action on Friday night at Belson Stadium when it places host to reigning Patriot League Champion Loyola Maryland. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
