St. John’s Hosts Villanova on Friday Night at MSG

The Red Storm makes its 2023 home debut at “The World’s Most Famous Arena” at 7 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following a pair of wins over Butler and No. 6/7 UConn, the St. John's men's basketball team returns home for its 2023 debut at Madison Square Garden on Friday against Villanova. FS1 will carry the national telecast at 7 p.m. live from "The World's Most Famous Arena," with Tim Brando and Jim Spanarkel on the call.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brandon Tierney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. St. John's radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 84 ESPNU Radio, as well as channel 84 on the SiriusXM app.
Tickets are still available for St. John's matchup with the Wildcats at MSG by visiting RedStormTix.com or calling 1-888-GO-STORM. 2,500 fans will go home with a St. John's water bottle courtesy of New York Presbyterian. Friday will also serve as one of the Red Storm's five "Borough Nights" with Manhattan being the honored borough. St. John's (13-6, 3-5 BIG EAST) enters Friday's matchup looking to ride the momentum from an 11-point road victory over UConn on Sunday in Hartford. The Red Storm had six players register double figures in a balanced scoring effort against the Huskies, including a team-high 19 points from senior center Joel Soriano. The Yonkers, N.Y., native also pulled down 13 rebounds for his Division I-leading 16th double-double of the season.
For his efforts in the Red Storm's two wins last week, Soriano earned national recognition being named the Naismith Trophy Player of the Week by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. He also garnered All-Met Player of the Week honors for the second time this season and was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
Posh Alexander and reigning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week AJ Storr added 14 points against UConn, while Dylan Addae-Wusu finished with 12 points in the victory. Rafael Pinzon (12 points) and Andre Curbelo (10 points) combined for 22 of the team's 26 bench points. As a team, the Johnnies shot 51.7 percent from the field and 62.2 percent inside the 3-point arc versus the Huskies.
On Friday, St. John's aims to extend its win streak to three and end a five-game slide in the series with Villanova. The last time the Johnnies won three-straight in BIG EAST play was during the 2020-21 campaign when Head Coach Mike Anderson led St. John's to five in a row, including four on the road, from Jan. 18 to Feb. 6. That string of wins featured a 70-59 victory over No. 3 Villanova on Feb. 3, 2021 in Queens.
In the last two victories, the Red Storm produced at a high level on both ends of the floor. Offensively, St. John's averaged 81.0 points, shooting 52.2 percent (60-115 FG) from the floor. On the defensive side, the Johnnies forced 21.5 turnovers per contest, while recording 20.5 points per game off opponent miscues.
Villanova (9-10, 3-5 BIG EAST) comes to The Garden after defeating Georgetown, 77-73, on Monday at Finneran Pavilion. The Wildcats had five players finish in double figures, including a team-high 16 points from Caleb Daniels. Freshman forward Cam Whitmore sank three of the team's eight 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.
Daniels leads the Wildcats and ranks fourth in the BIG EAST averaging 17.6 points in conference play. The 6-foot-4 guard also tops the conference with 2.9 3-pointers per contest in league action.
The Wildcats pace Division I shooting 83.4 percent at the free-throw line. Brandon Slater tops the BIG EAST and ranks 10th in the nation shooting 91.5 percent (65-71 FT) from the charity stripe. Villanova is also one of the top teams in the country in taking care of the ball, committing just 10.3 turnovers (14th in Division I) per contest.
St. John's and Villanova will meet for the 129th time in program history on Friday. The Wildcats are the most frequently played in the 116-year history of St. John's Men's Basketball.
