The Red Storm holds a 25-15-5 all-time record over the Pirates
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will return to Belson Stadium to take on BIG EAST foe Seton Hall on Wednesday in a 7 p.m. contest.
Wednesday's contest will be streamed on BIG EAST Digital Network on FloFC with Johnny Gadamowitz on the call. Live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com
The Johnnies (7-3-3, 2-1-2 BIG EAST) are coming off a 3-1 victory against Villanova, overcoming torrential rains and logging 34 shot attempts, including 15 on net, for the road win.
Reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week Macoumba Ba and Nigel Griffith put up identical one-goal, one-assist matches on Saturday, while Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau registered his fourth game-winning goal of the season. The forward also rattled off 10 shots in total, putting six of them on target.
Fleuriau Chateau became just the 13th player in program history to reach double-digit goals in a single season with his 10th against Villanova on Saturday. The Canadian attacker is also the first to do so since Tani Oluwaseyi scored 11 in 2019. Fleuriau Chateau is two tallies away from cracking the program's top 10 in single-season goals, looking to tie Fred Bischoff (1979 & 1980), Roberto DeLuca (1992) and soon-to-be St. John's Hall of Fame Ben Hickey (1995) for ninth with 12.
Sophomore Miguel Diaz continues to find himself among the nation's best with BIG EAST-leading eight assists after providing a helper on Ba's lone goal against the Wildcats. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native is one of 14 players to log eight or more assists this season. Of his eight assists, four have set up Fleuriau Chateau for a goal. With two more helpers, Diaz will be the first Red Storm player in 26 years to tally double-digit assists, marking the first since Stefani Miglioranzi registered 12 in the 1997 season.
St. John's enters Wednesday's matchup with a 25-15-5 record over Seton Hall while holding a slight 13-5-4 mark at Belson Stadium.
The last time these two teams met in Queens, the Red Storm and Pirates fought to a 0-0 draw in the pouring rain on Oct. 16, 2021. The Johnnies unloaded 16 shots in total while holding Seton Hall to just five. Former goalkeeper Luka Gavran tallied his eighth clean sheet of the season in that game, which was the most in a season since 2017.
Seton Hall enters the midweek slate with a 7-3-3 record, going 2-2-1 in conference play. Andrea Borg is chasing St. John's Diaz in assists, logging six of his own through 13 matches. The graduate student also paces the team with five goals and 16 points.
Goalkeeper Mats Roorda has produced a steady season, boasting a BIG EAST-leading 0.786 save percentage (31st in NCAA). The Netherlands native has made the third-most saves in conference matchups this season, turning away 25 shots on target.
