Fleuriau Chateau scores team-leading 11th goal while McLachlan logs fourth clean sheet
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team powered past Seton Hall with a 3-0 victory at Belson Stadium on Wednesday.
Scoring for the eighth time in nine games, redshirt junior Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau netted his 11th goal of the season. The Ottawa, Ontario native is one tally away from cracking the program's top-10 leaderboard for goals in a season, looking to match Fred Bischoff, Roberto DeLuca and Ben Hickey for ninth place with 12.
Junior Eric Danquah and senior Nigel Griffith both scored their second goal of the campaign while Thomas Lamaille and Lenny Cidolit each tallied two assists in the game.
Goalkeeper Alec McLachlan secured his fourth clean sheet of the year without having to record a save as the Red Storm prevented all six Pirates' shots from reaching the netminder.
St. John's (8-3-3, 3-1-2 BIG EAST) outshot its visitors, 9-6, while producing more corners, 6-1. The Johnnies moved to 26-15-5 all-time against Seton Hall with the three-goal victory.
The Red Storm found a pair of corners early thanks to pressure from Macoumba Ba and Camron Boumsong, who made his first collegiate start. The Johnnies cashed in on the latter, seeing Boumsong's corner ricocheted off a defender's head to Danquah's feet. The junior midfielder settled the redirection and lasered a shot through a crowd of players, finding the cage on the lower left side for a 1-0 edge just 6:55 into the match.
The Johnnies continued to keep Seton Hall out of its attacking third, limiting all cross attempts through the first 24 minutes.
Cidolit, who made his first start up front for the Johnnies, used his size to outwork Seton Hall's defender in the air after a stretch pass from Lamaille. Grazing the ball with his head, the Kingston, Jamaica native flew into open space and found a wide-open Griffith at the top of the six. The senior striker netted his second goal in as many games with a tap-in try for a 2-0 lead at 24:26.
The Red Storm held the Pirates (7-4-3, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) to just one shot in the opening frame while taking five of its own to hold a two-goal lead at the break.
After a quiet exchange through the first 18 minutes of the second half, the Johnnies began to charge ahead and capitalized on another won battle in the air. Lamaille launched a long throw-in towards the head of Cidolit inside the 18. The Rider transfer knocked a pass towards the six and found Fleuriau Chateau's head, seeing the Canadian striker find the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.
Seton Hall saw its best chance of the game come in the 72nd minute as Nico Rubio tried to rocket one through the Johnnies' back line, but Antonio Biggs remained low and blocked the opportunity from getting past the 18-yard box. The Red Storm defender went on to play 90 minutes in the contest, marking the 11th time this season he has done so.
St. John's staved off five second-half shots from the Pirates to hold on for its first win over Seton Hall since 2018.
The Johnnies will hit the road for the final time in the regular season, taking on No. 8 Georgetown at Shaw Field on Saturday in a 2 p.m. tilt.
