St. John’s Dominates Marquette, 3-0, Clinches Spot in BIG EAST Tournament

Red Storm earn playoff berth for third-straight season
MILWAUKEE- The St. John's women's soccer team dominated Marquette, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon to lock up a playoff berth.
With the win, the Red Storm clinch a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament for the third-straight season.
Ian Stone collected his 275th career victory en route to punching a ticket to the conference tournament for the 18th time during his tenure.
Jailene DeJesus netted her second goal of the year in the seventh minute to give the Red Storm an early lead. Ava Collinsfound the back-of-the-net for her third goal over the last five contests in the 59th minute.
Jessica Garziano registered a pair of assists to set a new career-high and tie the single-season program record with 11 on the year. The program's all-time career assist joins Jenifer Contesini (1996), Jamie Clark (2000) and Kaitlin Schmidt (2003) as the only players to ever record 11 helpers in one year.
Nicole Gordon logged her fifth assist on the season providing the centering pass that led to DeJesus' tally.
Maria O'Sullivan recorded her sixth clean sheet of the season at Valley Fields.
The Red Storm dominated in the shot category outshooting the Golden Eagles, 15-8.
St. John's wasted no time on Sunday getting on the board. In the seventh minute, Garziano played a long-ball towards the endline. Gordon was first to it and directed a pass toward the middle of the box. DeJesus won the challenge with a Golden Eagles defender, settled the ball and delivered a rocket into the top corner of the goal.
As the Johnnies continued to dominate play, a cross from DeJesus went straight into the Marquette goalkeeper and defender. The cross ricocheted off a Golden Eagles player and rolled into the net to make it 2-0 in the 21st minute.
The Johnnies continued to generate chances over the first 45 minutes totaling 10 shots. Garziano launched a strike but an acrobatic save by Mikki Easter kept it out of the net. Another opportunity arose when Collins put a header on frame off a corner kick but Easter punched it over the bar.
In the second half, the Johnnies continued to control possession and the flow of the game. The potent attack prevailed once again when Garziano found Collins, who tucked one home to make it 3-0 in the 59th minute.
The Red Storm held its opponents scoreless for the remainder of the match to secure a 3-0 victory and a playoff berth.
Sunday's convincing win marked the program's first-ever on the road at Marquette.
The Red Storm will return home for its regular season finale on Thursday night against DePaul on Oct. 26. Following the match, the Johnnies will compete in the BIG EAST Quarterfinals on Oct. 29. Opponent, location and time will be determined after the conclusion of Thursday's action.
