St. John’s Moves Past DePaul in Regular Season Finale, 1-0

The Red Storm will face Providence on the road in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team moved past DePaul, 1-0, on Thursday night at Belson Stadium in its regular finale.
With regular season playing concluding the squad will now prepare for the postseason. The fifth-seeded Red Storm will now head to the BIG EAST Quarterfinal on Sunday at fourth-seeded Providence.
The Johnnies strung together a stellar finish to conference play compiling a 5-1-1 record over its last seven matches to qualify for its third-straight conference tournament. For the second time in the last three years Ian Stone's squad reached the 10-win mark in the regular season. The Johnnies capped off its 18-game slate with a 10-5-3 record and finished 5-4-1 in league play.
Jessica Garziano scored her ninth goal of the season in the 56th minute to lift the Red Storm to victory. The outstanding midfielder concludes the regular season with an impressive nine goals and 11 assists (29 points).
Lauryn Tran recorded her sixth assist of the campaign providing the cross on Garziano's tally. The junior midfielder continues to shine rankings second on the team with 14 points (four goals, six assists).
Maria O'Sullivan collected her second-consecutive shutout and her seventh of the season. The Ballincollig, Ireland native tallied three saves on the night highlighted by an acrobatic stop late in the first half.
The first 45 minutes were defensive-minded with the Red Storm only tallying a pair of shots. Garziano dribbled through 30 yards of open space before delivered a crack that drifted wide in the 42nd minute.
O' Sullivan made an impressive save in the waning moments of the opening half. With just 34 seconds remaining in the opening frame, Beth Smyth delivered a strike to spiraled toward the top right side of the net but the goaltender punched it over the bar to keep the score level heading into the break.
In the second half the Red Storm quickly created an opportunity when Jordyn Levy fired a close range shot that was saved but the rebound sat on the edge of the six-yard box and Ava Collins turned one on net by Elene Milam smothered it to keep the game level.
Continuing to go on the offensive, St. John's broke the tie in the 56th minute. Tran took the ball down the left flank and sent a cross into the box. Collins dummied the incoming pass that went straight to Garziano, the team's leading scorer curled her away around the Blue Demons defender and tucked one home to give the Johnnies a 1-0 advantage.
The defensive unit denied the Blue Demons any threatening attacking opportunities over the final half-hour to secure a victory in the regular season finale.
The Red Storm will now prepare for its 18th-ever BIG EAST Tournament when it takes on Providence at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. The winner of the quarterfinal matchup will travel to Boyds, Md. to meet top-seeded Xavier in the semifinal on Nov. 2 at 4 p.m.
