Lamaille secures the Johnnies’ fourth defensive player honor of the year and second in as many weeks
QUEENS, N.Y. – After clinching a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament following conference action on Saturday evening, St. John's defender Thomas Lamaille earned his second BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week nod, as announced by the conference on Monday afternoon. Forward Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau also secured a spot on the conference's Weekly Honor Roll.
The Villejuif, France native picked up his second BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors following a 1-0-1 week against Seton Hall and No. 8 Georgetown, producing a pair of assists across 158 minutes of action on the back line.
It also marks the second-straight week the Johnnies have secured the individual defensive crown after Macoumba Ba captured the honor on Oct. 16. Lenny Cidolit also picked up the accolade for the Red Storm this season (Sept. 11), bumping the team's total to four.
Both of his helpers came on Wednesday against the Pirates, starting with the secondary helper on a goal Nigel Griffith, playing a long stretch pass to Cidolit, who tapped a pass to a wide-open Griffith for the second goal of the game. He followed up with a high-arcing throw-in towards the box that went off Cidolit's head to Fleuriau Chateau's foot for the third tally.
Lamaille also guided the Red Storm to a 1-1 tie with the Hoyas, holding the eighth-ranked team in the nation to just six shots in total, four of which were on frame.
Fleuriau Chateau picked up his second honor roll nod of the season, following a two-goal week against the Pirates and Hoyas.
His 59th-minute strike in a 3-0 victory over the Pirates matched the most goals in a season by a Johnnie since Tani Oluwaseyi in 2019. The Canadian striker followed up with an equalizer against the eighth-ranked Hoyas on the road, rocketing a one-time into the cage from Ba for his 12th of the year. The redshirt junior rattled off a team-best six shots, seeing five of them on target. With the goal in Washington D.C., Fleuriau Chateau cracked the program's top 10 for single-season goals with 12, matching St. John's Hall of Famer Fred Bischoff, soon-to-be inductee Ben Hickey and standout forward Roberto DeLuca.
His 12 strikes are also tied for fourth in the nation and is one of seven Division I players to tally 12 or more goals this season. Of the seven, Fleuriau Chateau has the fewest minutes played with 655, averaging one goal every 55 minutes.
Before beginning its quest for a 10th BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the Red Storm will return to Belson Stadium for its regular-season finale and Senior Day on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. against Creighton, part of Homecoming and Hall of Fame weekend on campus. Seeding for the conference tournament will be decided on the final day of the season.
