St. John’s to Host Fordham for Sunday Night Local Battle

QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer program will host Fordham for a Sunday night local battle at 7 p.m. from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
The two schools separated by just 10 miles will kick-off at 7 p.m. with Nick Deluca and Joey Jarzynka on the call from Queens. All fans in attendance can celebrate Johnny Thunderbird's birthday and will receive free cake.
St. John's is coming off a defeat at Syracuse in a torrential downpour on Wednesday night at SU Soccer Stadium, 5-0. The Orange took the lead in the first 10 minutes and never looked back in the 36th meeting between the two old BIG EAST rivals.
Nico Bezama recorded a career-high seven saves, marking a new personal best for the second consecutive contest. After making one save through the first three games, the sophomore is averaging 5.5 stops per outing over his last two appearances.
Over the last seven plus seasons, the Johnnies are 26-7-3 (.764) against non-conference opponents at Belson Stadium, dating back to the start of the 2019 campaign. The Red Storm won its last contest in Queens, 1-0, against Florida International courtesy of a Xavi Abeijon game-winner from the penalty marker.
After defeating the Panthers last week, Fordham will be the second of three St. John's opponents it faced during its run to the 1996 National Championship, 30 years ago. Rams Head Coach Carlo Acquista was a standout member of that title team under Dr. Dave Masur.
Fordham and St. John's will meet for the 19th time and the Johnnies have gone unbeaten in seven of the last eight matches. Entering Sunday, the Red Storm hold the slim all-time series lead, 9-8-1 and won the last meeting five years ago in a 1-0 triumph in Queens on Sept. 6, 2021.
The Rams enter Sunday's contest with a 2-3-1 overall record and most recently fell to Columbia at home, 1-0, on Wednesday night in its home opener. Sunday's contest will mark just the second match in New York City for the Rams after starting the year with a five-game road stint.
The Fordham defensive unit has been solid conceding just four goals through six games. The rams rank 21st in NCAA Division I with a 0.67 goals against average,
