No. 5 St. John’s Readies for No. 4 Providence in BIG EAST Tournament First Round

The Red Storm will face Providence on the road in the BIG EAST Quarterfinal on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's women's soccer team will prepare for the BIG EAST Tournament First Round presented by JEEP on Sunday at Providence.
The fifth-seeded Red Storm will take on the fourth-seeded Friars at 1 p.m. from Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. The playoff match will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Mike Mancuso on the call from the Ocean State.

The Johnnies wrapped up the regular season in impressive fashion compiling a 5-1-1 record over their last seven matches to qualify for their third-straight conference tournament. For the second time in the last three years Ian Stone's squad reached the 10-win mark in the regular season. St. John's finished out their 18-game schedule with a 10-5-3 record and finished 5-4-1 in league play.
On Thursday night, the Red Storm added another victory to the win column after defeating DePaul, 1-0, at Belson Stadium. Leading scorer Jessica Garziano sent the game-winner home in the 56th minute for her ninth of the season.
Garziano concludes the regular season with an impressive nine goals and 11 assists (29 points). The graduate student leads the league in assists and points and ranks second overall in goals.
Lauryn Tran recorded her sixth assist of the campaign providing the cross on Garziano's tally. The junior midfielder ranks second in the BIG EAST in helpers and seventh in total points with 14.
Maria O'Sullivan collected her second-consecutive shutout and her seventh of the season. The graduate student now ranks top-10 all-time in program history for most shutouts in a single-season.
The Red Storm will prepare for its 18th-ever BIG EAST Tournament all under the direction of Stone. The squad is seeking its third-straight semifinal appearance as a win will send them to the Maryland SoccerPlex to face top-seeded Xavier. The Johnnies captured a conference tournament title in 1994 and advanced to the championship match in 2021.
Sunday will mark the fourth time in the Johnnies' last five tournament appearances they will meet the Friars. St. John's holds a 2-1 record against Providence in BIG EAST Tournament competition. The last meeting took place at Belson Stadium on Oct. 31, with the Red Storm capturing a 2-1 victory courtesy of an overtime golden goal from Isabelle Aviza just 24 seconds into the extra period.
In the earlier meeting between the two sides this season, Frederique St.-Jean headed home the equalizer with 1:27 remaining to earn a 2-2 draw at Belson Stadium on Oct. 8.
Providence finished out the regular season with a 9-3-5 record and went 4-1-5 in conference play which earned the Friars a four-seed. Most recently, they picked up a 1-0 victory on the road at Villanova to cap off the regular season.
The Friars hold a 7-1-2 record while playing at home this season and will host their first tournament match since 2017.
Providence is led offensively by Meg Hughes, who ranks third in the league with eight goals on the season.
The winner of Sunday's will advance to the semifinal to meet No. 1 Xavier at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. That contest will begin at 4 p.m. and will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports.
