St. John’s to Welcome Xavier and Butler to Queens This Weekend

The Johnnies took down both teams in their first meetings of the 2023 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team will return home on Friday and Saturday night when they host Xavier and Butler for their second meetings of the 2023 campaign.
Xavier will battle the Red Storm in Carnesecca Arena on Friday at 7 p.m. On Saturday, Butler then comes to Queens for a date with the Johnnies at 5 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ESPN+ with live stats available at RedStormSports.com.
Earlier this season, St. John's took down Xavier in straight sets (25-17, 25-21 and 25-13) inside the Cintas Center in Cincinnati, Ohio on Oct. 6. Giorgia Walther contributed 10 kills while Rashanny Solano Smith added 13 digs.
The very next day, Oct. 7, the Red Storm defeated Butler in straight sets (29-27, 25-13 and 25-21) inside Hinkle Fieldhouse. In the match, Lucrezia Lodi and Erin Jones each notched double-doubles. Lodi tallied 12 kills and 13 digs while Jones added 11 kills and 12 assists.
At Carnesecca Arena in 2022, the Johnnies fell to the Musketeers, 3-2, but earned a straight-set victory over the Bulldogs.
Last weekend, Joanne Persico's squad went 1-1, taking down Georgetown in straight sets but then fell to Villanova in four sets, 3-1. The Johnnies' sweep against Georgetown marked the sixth of conference play this season for the team.
After one go around in the BIG EAST, St. John's is now tied for second place in the conference at 8-2 with No. 17 Creighton. RV Marquette holds a 9-1 record with its only conference loss being at the hands of the Red Storm. The Johnnies have only lost to Creighton and Villanova in BIG EAST competition and own a perfect 5-0 BIG EAST mark in Carnesecca Arena.
Jones had another solid weekend in conference play, notching her seventh double-double of the season consisting of 11 kills at a 50 percent clip and 10 assists in the Johnnies straight-set sweep over the Hoyas. She also tallied six digs and a block assist against Georgetown. Against Villanova, she added 10 kills, seven helpers, seven digs and four block assists.
Walther and Lodi each logged double-digit kills against Villanova, joining Jones in the feat. Walther paced the Johnnies with 13 kills and four digs, while Lodi produced 12 kills, five digs and an ace.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk posted 24 and 37 assists against Georgetown and Villanova, respectively. Against the Hoyas, she tacked on three first-set aces to go along with five digs.
Magda Stambrowska continued to be a force in front of the net, racking up seven total blocks at one per set paired with 11 kills and four digs across the weekend.
Xavier comes to Queens with a BIG EAST record of 6-4 and an overall mark of 13-8. Last weekend, the Musketeers went 0-2, falling to DePaul, 3-1, and Marquette, 3-0.
Carrigan O'Reilly has put together a monster season as Xavier's setter, racking up 657 assists, 109 kills, 180 digs and 30 blocks. She has also notched one triple-double this season. In conference matches, she ranks fifth in helpers.
Butler visits Carnesecca Arena with a 4-6 BIG EAST mark after falling to Marquette in straight sets, but then rebounding against DePaul with a 3-2 victory.
The BIG EAST leader in assists, Cora Taylor has tallied 812 at 10.41 per set for the Bulldogs. She has also added a team-high 20 aces, 51 kills, 193 digs and 45 block assists. Jaymeson Kinley paces Butler in digs with 392 averaging 5.03 per set, good for second in the conference.
