St. John’s Sweeps Xavier in Straight Sets for the Second Time This Season

Lucrezia Lodi posted her fourth double-double of the season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Lucrezia Lodi posted her fourth double-double of the 2023 campaign en route to the St. John's volleyball team's straight-set sweep over Xavier on Friday night inside Carnesecca Arena.
The scores of the sets were 25-14, 25-19 and 28-26. With the sweep, the Johnnies have now swept seven of their 11 BIG EAST opponents, matching their total from a season ago.
The Red Storm (17-7, 9-2 BIG EAST) put on a defensive clinic, limiting Xavier (13-10, 6-5 BIG EAST) to just 6.6 percent clip from the floor and only 30 kills. St. John's also outpaced the Musketeers on the block, racking up 10 compared to their six.
Lodi notched her fourth double-double of the season consisting of 14 kills hit at 36 percent and 10 digs. The sophomore also tacked on a solo block and an assist.
Erin Jones registered nine kills and 13 helpers to go along with three block assists and two digs. Magda Stambrowska contributed seven kills on a 77.8 percent clip.
Ludovica Zola posted a career-high seven blocks, two of which were solo blocks, paired with five kills and two aces. Eleonora Tosi contributed four kills and two blocks.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk paced the Johnnies in assists yet again, posting 26. Rashanny Solano Smith led the match in digs, registering 14 which is good for 4.7 digs per set in the sweep.
Xavier's Caroline Speelman and Delaney Hogan led the Musketeers in kills with seven a piece. Carrigan O'Reilly picked up 11 assists and six digs.
Lodi hammered home six kills to go along with four digs for the Johnnies in game one. St. John's ripped open the match to a 6-0 lead, all off Solano Smith's serves. Xavier went on a 4-1 run, benefiting from three kills and a Red Storm attack error to cut the Red Storm's lead down to three, 7-4. The Johnnies then grew their lead back seven, 15-8, off an 8-4 run that featured a crucial solo block from Tosi and four kills from Zola and Lodi. St. John's used another 5-2 stretch to give itself a 20-10 lead, forcing a Musketeer timeout. Both squads exchanged points at the end of the set, but Xavier's deficit was too great as the Red Storm took the set, 25-14.
Lodi piled on another six kills while Jones registered seven assists in the second stanza. The Johnnies hit the ground running in the second set with an 11-3 lead that featured seven kills spread among Tosi, Zola, Lodi, Jones and Stambrowska. St. John's continued to stockpile points on a 6-4 stretch, extending its lead to 10 points, 17-7. The Musketeers and the Red Storm went point for point, leading to a St. John's set point, 24-15. Xavier scored four straight points, challenging the Johnnies, but a massive Tosi kill capped off the set, 25-19.

Both teams battled to a 5-5 tie at the start of the set, but an O'Reilly kill gave the Musketeers their first lead of the match, 6-5, forcing a St. John's timeout. Xavier held a two-point lead for most of the middle of the set, but the Red Storm was able to even things back up at 16-all and take a 17-16 lead off a Stambrowska kill. The programs continued to trade points late in the frame to a 23-23 tie, but a Lodi kill brought the Johnnies to their first match point, 24-23. On the Johnnies second match point, 27-26, a Walther kill sealed the match, 28-27, securing the seventh BIG EAST sweep of the 2023 campaign.
St. John's will stay put at home in Queens N.Y. for a date against Butler tomorrow night inside Carnesecca Arena. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
