PHILADELPHIA (Oct. 9, 2023) – The St. John's men's tennis team wrapped up a strong four days of competition at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals Monday afternoon.
Carl Gustavsson and Ryota Kaneda both impressed in Philadelphia, each advancing to the Round of 16 in singles play. Kaneda recorded a team-high three individual victories while Gustavsson picked up two wins after receiving a first round bye.
Gustavsson took down William Burridge of Drexel in his opening match of the tournament in the Round of 64. The junior defeated Nejc Skorjanc of NJIT in the following round, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. On Monday, he fell in the quarterfinals to Penn's Kian Vakili in a hard-fought three-set match.
Kaneda began his run by defeating Jordan Paul from Lehigh in straight sets. After splitting the first two sets with Princeton's Landon Ardilla, Kaneda was dominant in the decisive third round, earning himself a trip to the next round, where he would beat Trevor Masi from Niagara in another three-set thriller. The junior's run would end in the Round of 16 at the hands of Cornell's Bradley Paliska.
Martin Bugaj also picked up a win in singles competition, defeating Archie Graham from St Bonaventure, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4.
