Red Storm picks up several wins over the weekend
The St. John's women's tennis team racked up several victories over the weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regionals at the Milstein Tennis Center hosted by Columbia University.
Four Red Storm student-athletes competed in the singles competition, totaling four victories. After earning a bye in the round of 128, graduate student Mouna Bouzgarrou defeated Wagner's Gabriella Perraundin and Julia Kelly from the United States Military Academy before falling to Leopoldine Boisseau from Long Island University in the round of 16. Victoria Papadopoulou and Arina Gumerova each picked up an individual win of their own as well.
The Johnnies also had three doubles squads in action. Papadopoulou and Camila Ordonez emerged victorious against Maggie Forkner and Allyce Gaborik from Lehigh to advance to the round of 32 before falling to a pair from Army. Nicoline Sartz-Lunde and Willa Bay Breunich defeated squads from Marist and Penn to reach the quarterfinals before dropping to Fordham's Xiaowei Hu and Anlin Xie.
Bouzgarrou and Gumerova previously qualified for the ITA Super Regionals doubles competition and will represent St. John's at the event on Oct. 20-23 in West Point, N.Y.
The fall season continues for the rest of the squad next weekend at the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 14-15.
