BRONX, N.Y. – The St. John's cross country team polished off its 2023 season at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y., on Friday morning.
As a team, the Red Storm placed 32nd with 941 points. The program beat out Colgate, Fordham, Hofstra, LIU and Fairfield in its first NCAA meet since the 2019 season.
"We had a gut punch this morning when we learned we would be without our low stick Claire Cushing, but our squad rallied and I'm very proud of the way our ladies competed today," said Head Coach Elliott Blount. "Though our team result wasn't what it could've been, we were all able to walk away with personal bests."
All six runners for the Johnnies recorded personal-best 6K times at the regional championship.
Ezgi Yasar paced St. John's in its final meet of the season. The sophomore improved her 6K time by nearly 40 seconds, finishing the race in 22:19.8 for a 148th-place result.
Gabriella Caronia finished second on the team in 22:56.0 for an overall 184th-place finish.
Ana Dobsa and Hannah Huleatt placed right behind each other in 194th and 195th, respectively. Dobsa ended her second career 6K race in 23:04.8 while Huleatt registered a finishing time of 23.05.1.
Cristina Stanescu and Jenna D'Onofiro rounded out the Red Storm's effort at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship with 252nd and 255th place finishes. Stanescu improved on her 6K time from the BIG EAST Championships by 59 seconds, completing the race in 24:41.6. D'Onofiro logged a career-best 6K time of 24:52.0.
The Red Storm concludes the 2023 campaign with two top-five team finishes, including a program-best first-place result at the Metropolitan Championship.
