CHARLESTON, S.C. – The St. John's men's basketball team will square off with Utah (3-1) in the third-place game of the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic on Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. inside TD Arena on the campus of College of Charleston.

An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Brian Mahoney will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM channel 388 and channel 978 on the SiriusXM App.
St. John's prevailed in its 2023 Charleston Classic opener by edging North Texas, 53-52, on Thursday. Joel Soriano helped anchor the Red Storm's top defensive performance of the season by swatting a career-best five shots to go with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
In the Red Storm's semifinal matchup with Atlantic 10 favorite Dayton, the Johnnies went head-to-head with the Flyers for the first 30 minutes before Dayton pulled away late in an 88-81 decision. Soriano had a game-highs of 21 points and nine rebounds. Chris Ledlum matched Soriano's nine rebounds against the Flyers, as the graduate student from Brooklyn pulled down seven on the defensive glass.
Graduate transfer Daniss Jenkins dished out eight assists for the second time this season against Dayton. He enters Sunday's contest with Utah ranked second in the BIG EAST averaging 5.2 assists per game.
As a team, the Red Storm ranks ninth in the nation averaging 17.8 offensive boards per contest. Soriano has led the charge on the offensive glass with 4.5 per game, which ranks 12th in Division I. The 6-foot-11 center is also leading the BIG EAST in rebounding for the second-straight year with 10.2 boards per contest.
St. John's and Utah will meet for the 15th time in a series that dates back to 1944. The Johnnies look to snap a two-game slide against the Utes. The programs last met on March 12, 1977, in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. Utah edged St. John's, 72-68, despite a 24-point, 14-rebound effort from Johnnies' great George Johnson.
With a win over the Utes, St. John's would secure third place in the 2023 Charleston Classic and match the program's best finish in an eight-team, three-day MTE since winning the Great Alaska Shootout in 2010. A victory on Sunday would also mark the program's first against a Pac-12 opponent since defeating No. 16 Arizona on Dec. 21, 2019, at the Chase Center in San Francisco.
Utah is coming off a 76-66 setback to No. 6/6 Houston on Friday in its semifinal contest in the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic. Gabe Madsen scored nearly half of the Utes points, as the senior guard finished with a career-high 29 points and hit eight 3-pointers. 7-foot center Branden Carlson had 17 points and went 7-for-10 from the line against the Cougars. Carlson and Madsen have been Utah's top scorers this season averaging 18.8 and 15.0 points, respectively.
The Utes opened the Charleston Classic with a 77-70 victory over Wake Forest on Thursday. Carlson went for 31 points, shooting 12-for-20 from the field and 4-for-7 from distance. He blocked five shots and grabbed four boards in a win over the Demon Deacons.
Utah returned four starters from last season, which includes seniors Madsen, Carlson, Rollie Worster and Ben Carlson. The quartet combined for 54.6 percent of the team's scoring last season.
