St. John’s Rolls Past Utah, 91-82, in Third-Place Game at Charleston Classic

Red Storm shot 53.0 percent from the field and made 13 3-pointers on Sunday against the Utes
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The St. John's men's basketball team wrapped up the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic by securing a third-place finish with a 91-82 victory over Utah on Sunday inside TD Arena.
The Red Storm (3-2) shot 53.0 percent (35-66 FG) from the field and converted 13-of-26 attempts (50.0 pct) from distance. St. John's also outscored the Utes, 16-5, in fastbreak points and won the battle of the boards by 10.
Daniss Jenkins led five Johnnies in double figures with 19 points, shooting 8-for-17 from the floor. The Iona transfer also chipped in a game-high eight assists and three steals to go with four rebounds in 36 minutes of action.
Senior guard Jordan Dingle went off for a season-best 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and hit four 3-pointers. The Valley Stream, N.Y., native also recorded five assists and three rebounds in his 32 minutes of work.
Chris Ledlum matched Dingle's four 3-pointers, finishing with 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks against the Utes. The Brooklyn native became the third Johnnie in the last four games to reach the 1,000-point threshold for his career, hitting the mark with a triple with 4:58 to go.
Senior captain Joel Soriano registered his third double-double of the season, posting 12 points and 15 rebounds. Nahiem Alleyne also chipped in 10 points off the bench for the Johnnies, shooting 4-for-6 with a pair of 3-pointers.
The Johnnies came out firing on all cylinders hitting nine of its first 13 shot attempts, including five 3-pointers, to take a 25-13 advantage at the 12:40 mark.
After the Utes trimmed the Red Storm lead to one, 30-29, at the under-eight media timeout, St. John's quickly answered. The Johnnies went on a 22-8 run that was capped off by an Alleyne 3-pointer with 24 seconds left in the half to go up 52-40.
Utah's Rollie Worster scored the final bucket of the frame, hitting a three from the corner with six seconds on the clock. He finished the half with a team-best 10 points.
St. John's 52 points in the opening period were the most in a half since the Johnnies poured in 60 points in the second half of a 119-62 victory over Mississippi Valley State on Nov. 9, 2021.
The Utes scored the first 11 points after intermission to claim its first lead of the game, 54-52, since the 17:40 mark in the first half forcing a Red Storm timeout.
The Johnnies responded with an 11-2 run of its own and secured a lead they would not relinquish. Dingle scored the final five points of the stretch beginning with a two-handed slam after splitting a pair of Utah defenders. He then drained a 3-pointer to give St. John's a 63-56 advantage at the 14-minute mark.
Despite allowing the Utes to cut its deficit to three, 63-60, with 12:23 remaining, St. John's had its final answer by outscoring Utah 26-12 over the next nine minutes of action. The Johnnies led by as many as 17 points late in the game to secure its third win of the season.
Utes' center Branden Carlson led all scorers with 22 points to go with eight rebounds in 29 minutes of action. Cole Bajema posted 14 points of his own while Rollie Worster and Gabe Madsen registered 12 and 11 points apiece, respectively.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 25, for a contest with Holy Cross inside Carnesecca Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. on FS2.
