Red Storm will play three games in San Juan, Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, P.R. – The St. John's women's basketball team will prepare for its first of three games at the Discover Puerto Rico Classic, when it takes on VCU on Thanksgiving Day.
The Red Storm will get the action started from San Juan at 5:30 p.m. ET from the Coliseo Guillermo Angulo. All three games of the tournament will be streamed on FloSports.
The Johnnies will enter the tournament following a 67-47 home victory over Manhattan on Sunday, fueled by a 30-point performance from Unique Drake.
St. John's went on an 18-2 scoring stretch to end the first quarter and never looked back to remain undefeated all-time against the Jaspers and move to 2-2 on the year.
Drake went off for a career-high 30 points in the winning effort and matched a program record with seven made 3-point field goals. She shot 7-for-9 from beyond-the-arc and became the 11th player in program history to reach the 30-point threshold in a single outing.
The redshirt senior has emerged as a prominent scoring threat for the Johnnies averaging 23.0 points per game, which ranks second in the BIG EAST. After tallying three 20-plus point scoring performances during her first four seasons in Queens, the redshirt senior has reached that mark in three of the squad's first four contests.
The Columbia, S.C., native has been elite from long-range and currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division I with 4.0 triples made per game. Drake is shooting at a 57.1 clip from 3-point land, which sits atop the conference and ranks top-25 in the country.
Sophomore Skye Owen has risen to the occasion off the bench and is averaging 8.3 points and a team-high 4.0 assists for the Red Storm this season.
The Red Storm have had success from beyond-the-arc shooting the three-ball at a 37.8 percent clip, which leads the BIG EAST and ranks top-50 nationally.
The meeting marks the first between VCU and St. John's since Dec. 5, 1986, when the schools faced off in the Investors Classic Charlottesville, Va. St. John's captured a 64-52 win in that contest.
The Rams will be the seventh Atlantic 10 opponent the Red Storm have faced during the Joe Tartamella Era. The head holds an 8-4 record against conference members during his time at the helm.
VCU arrives on the island having suffered its first loss of the campaign on Sunday, falling to James Madison and 3-1 on the year. The Rams started the campaign with victories against Hofstra William & Mary and East Carolina and Thursday will mark its first tilt outside the state of Virginia
The Rams are led by Sarah Te-Biasu, who is averaging a team-leading 15.5 points per contest. The
2023 All-Atlantic 10 Third Team selection averaged 12.7 points per contest last season
As a team, VCU has been strong against the 3-pointer defensively, holding opponents to just 20.7
percent from beyond-the-arc.
Thursday's contest will mark the first-ever game for the St. John's women's basketball program in
Puerto Rico.
Regardless of result, the Red Storm will face UCF on Friday and cap off the tournament against Jackson State on Saturday night.
