No. 3 St. John’s Readies For BIG EAST Semifinal Against No. 2 Marquette

The Johnnies swept No. 6 Villanova on Wednesday
MILWAUKEE – The third-seeded St. John's volleyball team readies for a meeting with second-seeded Marquette in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by JEEP.
The Red Storm's matchup with the Golden Eagles is set for 1:30 p.m. on Friday inside the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee. The semifinal round of the tournament will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports, with live stats available on RedStormSports.com.

On Wednesday, the Johnnies dominated sixth-seeded Villanova earning a straight-set sweep in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, marking their first playoff win since 2019. Lucrezia Lodi posted her fifth double-double of the season to propel the squad to a decisive win over the Wildcats.
On Tuesday, the BIG EAST announced its annual volleyball awards. The Red Storm cleaned up a plethora of accolades earning co-coaching staff of the year, two players landing on the all-conference team and one on the league's all-freshman team
In her 30th season with the program, Head Coach Joanne Persico as well as her Associate Head Coach Bryan Weber and Assistant Coach Ryan Cole, received the program's third Coaching Staff of the Year award, splitting the honor with Creighton.
Persico and her staff guided the Johnnies to their second-straight and 13th 20-win season in program history. The squad wrapped up the regular season with a 21-9 overall record and a 13-5 mark in BIG EAST play.
Jones and Lodi were both tabbed to the All-BIG EAST Team, while Rashanny Solano Smith was selected to the conference's all-freshman team.
Jones received her first all-conference recognition as a unanimous selection after leading St. John's in points (443.5), points per set (4.07 P/S), kills (392), kills per set (3.60) and double-doubles (12). The Albuquerque, N.M., product finished third in the BIG EAST in total kills and fourth in kills per set and points.
Lodi followed up her All-Freshman Team selection from a year ago with the first All-BIG EAST Team selection of her career. After returning from injury, The outside hitter averaged 3.34 points per set, 2.97 kills per set and 1.97 digs per set, which is the second-best on the team.
Rashanny Solano Smith was tabbed to the All-Freshman Team as the conference's sole unanimous selection. The two-time Freshman of the Week's 236 digs and 4.37 digs per set led the Red Storm this season.
The Johnnies will face off against Marquette for the third time this season after taking them down, 3-2, inside Carnesecca Arena on Oct. 14. The squad fell to the Golden Eagles, 3-0, inside the Al McGuire Center on Nov. 17. In the first meeting this season, Jones recorded the first triple-double in program history for St. John's.
Marquette completed the regular season with a 16-2 BIG EAST mark and a 20-9 overall record which earned them a two-seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. The last time the two programs met in the postseason, the Golden Eagles took down the Red Storm, 3-0, back in 2020.
Additionally, the Red Storm defeated then No. 12 Marquette in the 2019 BIG EAST Championship match, 3-1, en route to the programs second BIG EAST Tournament victory.
Aubrey Hamilton provides the offensive firepower for Marquette, racking up 383 kills, at 3.72 kills per set which is the third highest in the conference. Yadhira Anchnte is the Golden Eagles setter, posting 822 assists, good for 9.45 per set, which is the fifth-best in the conference.
With a win on Friday, the Red Storm will advance to the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship Game where they would battle with the winner of No. 1 Creighton and No. 5 DePaul's matchup in the Al McGuire Center.
