No. 3 St. John’s Falls to No. 1 Creighton, 3-0 in the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship Match

Erin Jones and Lucrezia Lodi were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament team
MILWAUKEE – The third-seeded St. John's volleyball team fell to first-seed Creighton, 3-0, in the title match of the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship presented by JEEP inside the Al McGuire Center. The scores of the sets were 13-25, 9-25 and 23-25.
All-conference duo Erin Jones and Lucrezia Lodi were tabbed to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team, due to their play throughout the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship.
Jones logged 28 kills, 30 assists and 24 digs throughout the conference tournament. The sophomore also notched her 13th double-double of the season against Marquette in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinal.
Lodi totaled 39 kills, 19 digs, four aces and three total blocks across the tournament.
Jones and Lodi each earned seven kills in the conference title game. Jones added eight assists, four digs and an ace. Lodi also contributed six digs and a block assist.
Giorgia Walther also tacked on six kills against the Bluejays.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk totaled a team-high 14 assists to go along with four digs.
Rashanny Solano Smith registered 10 digs and an assist in the title match.
Creighton's Kiana Schmitt recorded a match-high 12 kills at a 52.6 percent clip. BIG EAST Player of the Year Kendra Wait led the Bluejays with 31 helpers to go along with four blocks.
Creighton ran out to a 4-0 lead at the start of the match, which forced a St. John's (23-10, 13-5 BIG EAST) timeout. The Bluejays continued to grow their lead to nine with a 7-2 run, leading, 11-2. The squads exchanged points through the remainder of the set, but the Red Storm couldn't chip away at its deficit, leading to a Creighton, 25-13, first-set victory.
Jones and Lodi each logged three kills apiece for St. John's in the second frame. The Bluejays kicked off game two with a 11-3 opening advantage off a collection of kills and Johnnie errors. The Bluejays then used a 9-5 stretch to go up by 12, 20-8 and cruised to a major, 25-9 second-set victory, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
Walther led the Johnnies with five slams in the third and final stanza. The Johnnies went up 6-4 to start the set, but Creighton responded right back with a 7-2 stretch to lead by three, 11-8. With the Bluejays up, 13-10, the squads battled point-for-point until the Johnnies secured three straight scores from two Lodi kills and a Creighton attack error to only trail by one, 20-19. A final 5-4 run for Creighton secured a third-set victory, 25-23 and the BIG EAST Championship Title.
The Johnnies will wait to see if their name is called in the NCAA Volleyball Championship Selection Show tomorrow night. The selection show will be broadcast on ESPN at 6 p.m.
