St. John’s Set to Face Howard in Opening Round of the 2023 NIVC Tournament

The Johnnies will battle with the Bison for the third time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team is set to face Howard in the first round of the 2023 NIVC Tournament on Friday night.
The Red Storm will face off with the Bison at 7 p.m. on Friday inside Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y. The opening round of the postseason tournament will be broadcast on FloSports with Peter Ferreri and Joe Vasile on the call. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies enter the NIVC Tournament as one of eight host schools for the opening two rounds. St. John's is set to host a pod of teams, featuring South Florida, Buffalo and Howard.
South Florida will match up with Buffalo at 4 p.m. on Friday, before the Red Storm's match with Howard. The winner of each contest will battle in the second round on Saturday at 5 p.m. in Queens.
St. John's earned a bid into the NIVC Tournament for the second-straight year and the third time in program history. The Johnnies previously made appearances in the tournament in 2018 and 2022.
In 2018, the squad fell to the College of Charleston in the opening round of the NIVC, 3-1. Last season, St. John's earned its first-ever NIVC win when it took down Binghamton in straight sets to advance to the round of 16. In the second match of the tournament, they fell to Boston College, 3-0.
Last week, the third-seeded Red Storm advanced to its third conference title match in program history where they fell to first-seed Creighton, 3-0. The BIG EAST runners-up put together an impressive run in the conference tournament, besting sixth-seeded Villanova, 3-0 and second-seeded Marquette, 3-2.
The program finished the season with its highest-win total since 2018, boasting a 23-10 overall record. Its 13-5 mark in BIG EAST play, gave the Johnnies their most conference wins since 2007.
At the conclusion of the BIG EAST Volleyball Championship, all-conference duo Erin Jones and Lucrezia Lodi were tabbed to the conference all-tournament team.
Throughout the league championship, Jones logged 28 kills, 30 assists and 24 digs. The sophomore notched a near triple-double and her 13th double-double of the season against Marquette. The Albuquerque, N.M., native tallied 20 assists, 12 digs and nine kills in the match.
Lodi totaled 39 kills, 19 digs, four aces and three total blocks. Against the Golden Eagles, she led the match with 20 kills at a 30.2 percent clip with three digs and three aces.

The two schools most recently battled on Sept. 7, 2019, inside Carnesecca Arena, where St. John's came out on top, 3-0. Efrosini Alexakou and Klara Mikelova paced the Red Storm with 11 kills apiece.
Howard comes into the NIVC Tournament after falling to Coppin State in the MEAC title match. The school holds a 17-14 overall record and an 11-2 mark in conference play.
Two-time MEAC Player of the Year, Rya McKinnon is the Bison kill leader. McKinnon has racked up an MEAC-best 380 kills, averaging 3.58 kills per set. The sophomore also added 217 digs, 29 aces and 25 total blocks.
