St. John’s to Open 2023-24 Season Against LIU

Red Storm will tip-off the campaign at Carnesecca Arena on Monday Night
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's women's basketball program will begin its 2023-24 campaign on Monday night.
The action will tip-off from Carnesecca Arena at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on FloSports with Ralph Bednarczyk on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com
The first 500 fans will receive a 2023-24 St. John's schedule poster and the first 150 students in attendance will receive a free Chick-fil-A chicken sandwich. To purchase tickets for Monday night's contest click here.
Under the tutelage of reigning BIG EAST Coach of the Year Joe Tartamella, now in his 12th season at the helm, the Johnnies will look to build off a successful season last year. In 2022-23, the Red Storm compiled a 23-9 record, a 13-7 mark in BIG EAST play and advanced in the NCAA Tournament.
The Red Storm will look to prolong its non-conference regular season win streak which currently stands at nine games. St. John's was one of nine schools in NCAA Division I to go undefeated in its out-of-league slate last season.
BIG EAST Sixth-Woman of the Year Unique Drake returns for her fifth-season in Queens after leading all of the league's bench players in scoring. The guard averaged 8.6 points per game and ranked second on the squad with 38 made 3-pointers. The redshirt senor was recognized by the league on Oct. 24 earning preseason all-conference honorable mention recognition.
Jillian Archer is also back for the Johnnies after starting 31 out of 32 games at power forward last year. The graduate student ranked eighth in the league in rebounding with 7.7 per game and added 7.2 points per contest on 50.3 percent shooting from the floor.
After losing six players to graduation, the Johnnies re-loaded with eight newcomers comprised of four transfers and four freshmen.
Amber Brown comes to Queens after a strong four-year career in Pittsburgh. The Monroe, La., native carries loads of experience after starting 110 contests in the ACC. A capable rebounder, Brown ranks top-10 all-time in Panthers' history with 680 career boards.
Ber'Nyah Mayo will look to make an impact after a successful three-year stint at UMass. The 2022-23 All-Atlantic 10 Second Team selection captured a regular season and conference title while with Minutewomen. A pesky defender, Mayo ranked 17th in the country in total steals last season recording 85.
The Red Storm carry a seven-game winning streak in season openers into Monday night's match-up dating back to 2016. Under Tartamella, the Johnnies boast a 10-1 record in their home opener in Carnesecca Arena.
Despite the close proximity between the two schools, its been nearly 14 years since the two have met on the hardwood. The last meeting took place on Dec. 10, 2009 with the Red Storm taking a 78-64 victory at Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies lead the all-time series against formerly LIU-Brooklyn, 6-1.

Fifth-year Head Coach Rene Haynes brought in eight newcomers including four graduate transfers to bolster the Sharks roster.
