Fleuriau Chateau secures a First Team selection, while Ba and McLachlan capture Second and Third Team nods, respectively
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team saw three players earn All-BIG EAST honors as announced by the league on Tuesday. Forward Nicolas Fleuriau Chateau secured a spot on the conference's top team while midfielder Macoumba Ba and goalkeeper Alec McLachlan captured second and third team selections, respectively.
It marked the first time since the 2019 campaign that the Johnnies have at least one player on all three BIG EAST teams. All three players also earned their first postseason conference honor with their respective nods.
All-BIG EAST First Team selection Fleuriau Chateau went on an improbable run in his 17 appearances this season, logging 14 goals and one assist for 29 points. The redshirt junior finished the year in a four-way tie for fifth on St. John's single-season goals leaderboard, tying Medufia Kulego (1996), Shalrie Joseph (2000) and Simone Salinno (2003) with 14 on the year.
The Ottawa, Ontario native finished the regular season in a five-way deadlock for the NCAA Division I lead in goals, joining fellow BIG EAST competitor Jason Shokalook of Akron, as well as Oral Roberts' Luis Flores, UMass' Alec Hughes and Western Michigan's Dylan Sing for the nation's top scoring mark. He is ranked inside the Division I top five for points, logging 29 in total and ranking fourth nationally at the season's end.
Fleuriau Chateau picked up three weekly honors, including an Offensive Player of the Week accolade following his final brace of the year in the team's season finale against the Bluejays (Oct. 28). The Canadian striker also logged two-goal outings against Rutgers (Aug. 28) and Columbia (Oct. 3).
Ba, who made his way to Queens after two seasons at Louisville, earned a spot on the All-BIG EAST Second Team in his first year with the Red Storm. The Dakar, Senegal native used his shiftiness and speed to register four goals and six assists as a midfielder. His 14 points in total were the second-most on the Red Storm this season.
After assisting on the first goal of the year from Max McNulty at Lehigh (Aug. 24), Ba provided the game-winner on a penalty kick against St. Peter's (Sept. 4). The junior midfielder rattled off three points in a pair of contests, producing a goal and an assist in the Johnnies' 7-1 triumph over Temple (Sept. 11) and a 3-1 victory at Villanova (Oct. 14).
The Louisville transfer also managed to lock up a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod (Sept. 11) and a conference defensive player of the week selection (Oct. 16).
McLachlan rounded out the Red Storm's accolades with his All-BIG EAST Third Team nod, putting forth a solid campaign in net during his first season in Queens. The St. Francis Brooklyn transfer went 7-3-5 with the Johnnies, posting a 1.17 goals against average and a .717 save percentage.
The Johnnies' keeper also logged four clean sheets, holding Monmouth (Sept. 1), Providence (Oct. 7) and Seton Hall (Oct. 18) off the board.
McLachlan's most pivotal shutout came against RV Marquette (Sept. 29), holding the Golden Eagles scoreless and earning a 1-0 victory despite the team playing down two men for over 30 minutes. The Stockport, England native kept second-chance opportunities to a minimum after seeing Marquette unload 19 shots and 17 corner kicks in total. Of the 19 chances, 17 shots were produced in the second half and 13 were launched in the final 30 minutes of the match. His efforts secured him a BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll selection.
The Red Storm's netminder also secured a BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honor on Oct. 9 after a stellar week against Columbia and Providence. After making three saves in the one-goal victory over the Lions, McLachlan stared down 10 shots in total against the Friars. McLachlan made a brilliant stop in the 82nd minute on Gevork Diarbian, sprawling out on a breakaway and getting his left hand on the shot to push it wide of the cage to preserve the 1-0 clean sheet.
St. John's ended the 2023 campaign with an 8-4-5 record and saw Head Coach Dr. David Masur earn the 450th win of his coaching career. With the three All-BIG EAST nods this season, Coach Masur has guided nearly 110 all-conference selections across his 33 seasons with the Red Storm.
