Giorgia Walther registered 10 kills for the Red Storm
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The St. John's volleyball team fell to Seton Hall in straight sets, 3-0, on Wednesday night inside Walsh Gymnasium. The scores of the sets were 17-25, 17-25 and 20-25.
Giorgia Walther paced St. John's (20-7, 12-3 BIG EAST) with 10 kills, two blocks and two digs. Both Erin Jones and Eleonora Tosi logged seven kills in the match. Jones earned nine assists, five digs, two blocks and an ace for the Johnnies.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk tallied a team-high 16 assists to go along with five digs and a block.
Rashanny Solano Smith collected a match-high 10 digs to go along with two assists.
Ludovica Zola totaled six blocks for the fourth time in five matches.
The Pirates (13-12, 8-7 BIG EAST) out blocked the Johnnies 14-6.
Seton Hall's Bianca Bucciarelli registered a match-high 11 kills. She also recorded five digs, three total blocks and an ace. Taylor Jakubowski posted 12 assists while Rylee Nelson notched eight digs.
Walther paced the frame with five kills in set one. Seton Hall kicked off the match by taking a 4-1 lead, recording four unanswered points after a Walther kill, which forced a St. John's timeout. Down five, 10-5, the Johnnies used an 8-3 run that featured four kills combined from Jones and Walther to knot the frame at 13. The Hall scored four straight points to take a 17-13 lead and cruised through the remainder of the set, to grab the early advantage, 25-17.
Zola picked up two blocks in the second frame for the Red Storm. Both squads battled from the jump in the second game, leading to a 12-12 tie. The Pirates secured two straight points off a kill and an ace, taking a slim two-point lead, 14-12, forcing a St. John's timeout. Seton Hall continued to pile on points off an 8-4 run to give themselves an eight-point lead, 22-16. A final 3-1 stretch for The Hall secured the second set, 25-17.
Tosi led the Johnnies with five kills at a 33.3 percent success rate in the third frame. Lucrezia Lodi earned four digs. After falling behind by three, 5-2, the Red Storm earned three straight points to tie the set at 5-5. Tied at 6, The Hall engineered a 4-1 run, retaking their three-point lead, 10-7. With the Pirates up, 14-10, the Johnnies manufactured a 4-1 run off two kills from Walther and Tosi, to cut the Seton Hall lead down to one, 15-14. Up by one, 21-20, the Pirates earned four straight points to secure a third set victory, 25-20.
St. John's will host No. 15 Creighton on Saturday night inside Carnesecca Arena for Senior Night and its home finale. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Queens.
