Lucrezia Lodi registered 19 kills at a 36.1 hitting percentage
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team fell to No. 15 Creighton in four sets, 3-1, on Saturday night inside Carnesecca Arena. The scores of the sets were 25-23, 23-25, 17-25 and 10-25.
The Red Storm snapped a Creighton 10-match sweep streak by winning the first set of the match.
Lucrezia Lodi paced St. John's (20-8, 12-4 BIG EAST) with 19 kills at a 36.1 percent rate with five digs, four blocks and two aces.
Erin Jones logged her 11th double-double of the season against Creighton (21-5, 14-2 BIG EAST). The sophomore registered a near triple-double of 13 kills at a 44 hitting percentage with 20 assists and eight digs.
Magda Stambrowska posted six total blocks in the match, three of which were solo blocks. She also hammered down four kills. Amariis Garcia recorded three blocks, tying her career high.
Rashanny Solano Smith tallied 16 digs, averaging four digs per set, paired with six assists and an ace. The freshman leads the Red Storm in digs with 369.
Wiktoria Kowalczyk led the Johnnies in assists for the 27th time this season. The junior notched 21 helpers to go along with four digs.
Creighton's Ava Martin and Norah Sis led their team in kills with 18 and 14, respectively. Kendra Wait totaled 41 assists while Kiana Schmitt posted six denials.
Lodi paced St. John's in the first frame with seven kills at a remarkable 77.8 percent clip. The Johnnies stormed out to a 6-3 lead at the beginning of the match, benefitting from points on three straight Lodi serves. Creighton responded by growing a three-point advantage, 12-9. The Red Storm strung together four straight points for a one-point lead, 13-12. The Bluejays answered St. John's challenge with four consecutive points of their own, putting themselves up 16-13. The Johnnies went on a 9-5 stretch at the end of the set, which featured four straight points from Jones and Lodi to take a slim, 22-21 lead. A final 4-2 run for the Red Storm, capped off by a Lodi kill secured a first set victory, 25-23, in St. John's favor.
Lodi posted another five kills in the second frame, while Stambrowska picked up three blocks. The Johnnies and the Bluejays battled to open the frame with a 10-10 tie. Creighton took their first substantial lead of the period, 13-10, off three Red Storm errors. Creighton held its three-point advantage for much of the middle of the set, leading 19-16, despite pressure from St. John's. A 5-1 stretch for the Johnnies on the back of four Bluejay errors knotted the frame at 21-all. A final 4-3 Creighton run ended the set, 25-23, giving each team one win a piece.
Jones and Lodi both produced five kills each in the third set. The Bluejays jumped out to a 5-2 lead to start the third stanza, forcing a St. John's timeout. Creighton continued to pile on points, growing its lead to seven, 9-2. The Johnnies chipped their deficit down to two, 9-7, recording five straight points off Bree Martin serves. The Bluejays got back in a groove with an 8-1 stretch, bringing their lead back to seven, 15-8. Despite the two squads trading points for the back half of the set, Creighton was able to take the third set, 25-17 and own a 2-1 advantage in the match.
The Red Storm opened the fourth game with a 5-3 lead, but the Bluejays poured on five consecutive points to take a three-point lead, 8-5. Creighton continued to add to its advantage, growing it to eight, 17-9, off a 9-4 run. The Bluejays never let up, polishing the match off with a dominant 8-1 stretch to end a decisive fourth frame with a 25-10 set victory.
St. John's will travel to RV Marquette in Milwaukee and DePaul in Chicago next weekend to polish off its regular season slate on Friday and Saturday night.
