St. John’s Falls to Boston College, 86-80, at NABC Brooklyn Showcase

Joel Soriano and Chris Ledlum post double-doubles for the Johnnies who had their four-game win streak snapped on Sunday
BROOKLYN – The St. John's men's basketball team fell to Boston College, 86-80, in the 2023 NABC Brooklyn Showcase at Barclays Center on Sunday.
Senior center Joel Soriano led five Red Storm players in double figures with 21 points to go with 11 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Chris Ledlum also registered a double-double, finishing with 16 points and 11 boards for the Johnnies who had their four-game win streak snapped by the Eagles.
The Eagles were led by Quinten Post who nearly registered a triple-double. The 7-foot graduate student from Amsterdam, Netherlands, posted 14 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and three blocks in 39 minutes of action.
St. John's and Boston College played nearly an even first half as the Eagles entered the break with a 38-36 edge. Both teams struggled from 3-point territory in the opening stanza shooting a combined 2-for-15 beyond the arc.
Ledlum recorded 12 of his 16 points in the first half for St. John's while Post had 13 of his 14 points in the opening frame for the Eagles.
After falling behind 42-38 with less than three minutes into the second half, the Johnnies unleashed a 14-0 run to open a 10-point advantage by the 14:55 mark. Soriano scored the first six points of the spurt before Glenn Taylor Jr. drained a 3-pointer which was followed by a three-point play from Jordan Dingle.
Boston College answered with a 19-4 run over the next four and a half minutes, which featured three of the team's five 3-pointers, to regain a 61-56 advantage. However, St. John's responded again with the next eight points capped by four-straight free-throws from Soriano to go up five with 7:56 to go.
The Eagles made one final push to claim the advantage for good as Chas Kelley III scored six-straight points to put Boston College up two, 68-66, at the 6:20 mark. Kelley recorded nine of his 13 points in the final eight minutes of action, including a 3-pointer with 3:11 to go which helped seal the victory.
Boston College shot 56.4 percent (31-55 FG) from the field and sank 19 free-throws. The Johnnies finished 40.3 percent (31-77 FG) from the floor and 87.5 percent (14-16 FT) at the line.
Jaeden Zackery and Claudell Harris Jr. each matched Post with a team-high 14 points.
Taylor, Dingle and Daniss Jenkins scored 10 points apiece for the Johnnies. Jenkins also finished with eight assists with no turnovers and made four steals.
St. John's will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Fordham at Madison Square Garden in the Holiday Festival. Tip off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on FS1. Georgia Tech and Penn State open the tripleheader at 12 p.m. The St. John's women's basketball team's contest with Villanova wraps up the event at 6 p.m.
