Red Storm to face three 2023 NCAA Tournament teams in 15-game slate
Head Coach Justin Turri unveiled the program's 15-game schedule for the 2024 season on Friday.
The Red Storm will play seven games in Queens and eight on the road, including three games against opponents who qualified for last season's NCAA Tournament. The Johnnies will play four contests at Belson Stadium and the remaining home games at DaSilva Memorial Field.
"We are excited to unveil the 2024 schedule on the eve of the holidays and the new year," said Turri, who is set to begin his second year at the helm of the program. "It's a slate that will challenge us in a multitude of ways, with some returning matchups from 2023 and a few new ones for 2024. We have a long way to go in our preparation, with February 3rd off in the distance, but we are eager to test our development against some of the best programs across the country."
The Red Storm will open its season with a two-game homestand, beginning on Saturday, Feb. 3 at DaSilva against NJIT at 2 p.m., marking the first matchup between the two programs in history. Seven days later, the Red Storm will welcome Quinnipiac to Queens on Feb. 10 at 1 p.m., for the first meeting in 15 years. In the last contest between the Red Storm and the Bobcats, St. John's tallied a 15-8 victory on Feb. 21, 2009.
St. John's will hit the road for the first time on Feb. 13 when it takes the short trip to Long Island to take on Hofstra for the 26th time in program history at 6 p.m. This will also mark the 15th straight season the Red Storm and Pride have faced off against one another.
Up next is a home matchup on Feb. 17 with reigning CAA champions Delaware at 1 p.m. at DaSilva Memorial Field. Brian Kelly and Sean Duffy each recorded a hat trick on the road against the Blue Hens a season ago. Delaware is coming off its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in 2023, where it advanced in the tournament for the second straight year.
Following the battle with Delaware, the Red Storm will be on the road for three contests in a seven-day stretch, beginning with a Feb. 24 visit to Richmond. The Spiders won the first-ever Atlantic 10 lacrosse title in 2023 and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Face-off between St. John's and Richmond is set for noon.
Four days later, the Red Storm will head to Charlotte, N.C., for the first matchup in program history with Queens University on Feb. 28 at 4 p.m. The road trip concludes in the Sunshine State for a noon face-off with Jacksonville on March 2.
St. John's will make its 2024 Belson Stadium debut on March 9 when it faces Binghamton for the second consecutive year. The Red Storm played two BIG EAST contests in the on-campus venue in 2023 and will take on the Bearcats at 1 p.m. for its first of four matchups this season at Belson.
On March 16, the squad will take a trip to Saint Joseph's before closing the non-conference portion of its schedule at Le Moyne on March 23 in Syracuse, N.Y.
The Red Storm will kick off its five-game BIG EAST slate on March 30 at Belson Stadium against Marquette at 12 p.m. The Golden Eagles return its top five point-scorers from a year ago, including junior Bobby O'Grady who scored 43 goals last season and was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team. First Team All-BIG EAST selection Devon Cowan also returns for Marquette after a season where he tallied 30 points.
Up next is a trip to Colorado for a matchup with Denver on April 5 at 8 p.m. (6 p.m. MST). The Pioneers advanced to the BIG EAST championship game in 2023 before falling to Georgetown. Eight Denver players were named to an All-BIG EAST team last spring, including current graduate student JJ Sillstrop who led the squad in points (40) and goals (36).
The Johnnies return to Belson Stadium on April 13 to take on Villanova at 1 p.m. The squad from Pennsylvania went 10-5 last season, earning a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, where it lost to Denver in the semifinals. The Wildcats have big holes to fill after losing leading point-getter and reigning BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year, Matt Campbell, and All-BIG EAST First Team defender Chet Comizio.
On April 20, the Red Storm will travel to Washington D.C. to face 2023 NCAA quarterfinalist Georgetown. The five-time consecutive BIG EAST champions led the conference in goals, assists, points, and ground balls per game last season.
St. John's will wrap up the regular season back in Queens on April 26 when it welcomes Providence to Belson Stadium at 7 p.m. The Red Storm and the Friars played a tight game last spring, where the Johnnies eventually fell in overtime, 12-11. Goaltender Kyle Munson tied the program record since reinstatement (2005) with a 23-save performance against the Friars.
The 2024 BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP will be held at Villanova from May 2-4. The top-4 finishers in conference play will qualify.
