Karen Beglin led the way for the Red Storm with a top-50 finish
MELBOURNE, Fla.— The St. John's women's golf team closed out its opening event of the spring season the Columbia Classic on Monday afternoon.
The Red Storm finished T-13th overall as a team over the 36 holes battling windy conditions at the Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla. Texas Tech won the tournament shooting 5-under par as a group.
Sophomore Karen Beglin was the Johnnies top finisher placing 49th overall, shooting 11-over par (155) over two rounds. Jessie Kweon checked in right behind her T-54th carding a 13-over combined score of 157.
To round out the line-up three Red Storm players finished in the top-70- Amy Kim (T-65th), Cloe Clochiatti (68th) and Angelica Kunsowo (T-69th).
Jill Beglin competed as an individual and finished the competition T-72nd. The senior recorded a strong second round to end the tournament, shooting a 6-over 78.
In the first round on Saturday, Kweon registered a team-low 6-over-par 78, highlighted by a birdie on the par-3 fourth hole.
The second round scheduled for Sunday was postponed and then ultimately cancelled due to high winds in the area. Play was suspended after winds reached over 25 mph with gusts over 40 mph.
As the weather conditions tamed, the teams returned the course on Monday morning for the final round of the now 36-hole event. St. John's lowered its score by five strokes as a squad in the final round. Karen Beglin turned in a team-best 3-over-par 75 in her final round in the Sunshine State. The Carson City Nev., native sunk one birdie putt and logged 13 pars over 18 holes on Monday.
The Johnnies will be back in action in a month, when they participate in the Spring Break Shootout at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club on March 13-14, hosted by Western Kentucky.
